During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Mount Woodson Golf Club
One of San Diego County's most dramatic golf courses, Mount Woodson is a par-70, 6,180-yard course on 150 beautiful acres. The award-winning 18-hole course, which opened in 1991, meanders up and down hills, across bridges, and around granite boulders. Elevated tees provide striking views of Ramona and Mount Palomar, and on a clear day you can see for almost 100 miles. It's easy to combine a game of golf with a weekend getaway to Julian (see chapter 11). Greens fees for 18 holes (including mandatory cart) are $65 Monday through Thursday, $85 Friday and Sunday, $90 on Saturday. Early-bird, afternoon, and twilight rates are available, and seniors get a discount. Mount Woodson is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.
Chula Vista Nature Center
Sweetwater Marsh is one of San Diego's top bird-watching spots, and the nature center provides walking trails and a facility for experiencing the bird life, as well as stingrays and small sharks in kid-level open tanks. There's a walk-through aviary of shore birds, and other aviaries feature raptors and burrowing owls. The parking lot is located away from the center and a shuttle bus ferries guests between the two points.
The Gondola Company
This unique business operates from Loews Coronado Bay Resort, plying the calm waters between pleasure-boat docks in gondolas crafted according to centuries-old designs from Venice. It features all the trimmings, right down to the striped-shirt-clad gondolier with ribbons waving from his or her straw hat. Mediterranean music plays while you and up to five friends recline with snuggly blankets, and the company will even provide antipasto appetizers (or chocolate-dipped strawberries) and chilled wineglasses and ice for the beverage of your choice (BYOB).
Bristol Hotel
If you're looking for a basic business hotel with a sunny splash of style, you can do no better than the economical Bristol, which boasts a boxy, IKEA-esque geometric decor accented by energetic primary colors and an admirable collection of late-20th-century pop art from Warhol, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, and Haring. Everything still feels crisply new from the 2001 makeover that rendered this formerly baroque property almost unrecognizable. Though it doesn't offer many on-site amenities to keep you around during the day, and the staff could be warmer, these brightly modern rooms are fun to come home to. Each morning a nice breakfast spread is laid out in the downstairs Daisies Bistro, which offers all-day dining and a cozy, after-work bar.
Park Manor Suites
Popular with actors appearing at the Old Globe Theatre in neighboring Balboa Park, this eight-story hotel was built as a full-service luxury hotel in 1926 on a prime corner overlooking the park. One of the original investors was the family of child actor Jackie Coogan. The Hollywood connection continued -- the hotel became a popular stopping-off point for celebrities headed for Mexican vacations in the 1920s and 1930s. Although dated, guest rooms are huge and very comfortable, featuring full kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms with a separate dressing area. A few have glassed-in terraces; request one when you book. The overall feeling is that of a prewar East Coast apartment building, complete with steam heat and lavish moldings. Park Manor Suites does have its weaknesses, particularly bathrooms that have mostly original fixtures and could use some renovation. But prices are quite reasonable for Hillcrest; there's an old-world restaurant on the ground floor, laundry service is also available, and a simple continental breakfast buffet is served in the penthouse banquet room (the view is spectacular). The penthouse bar becomes a bustling social scene on Friday evenings, drawing a horde -- the single elevator gets a real workout that night.
Embassy Suites Hotel San Diego Bay-Downtown
What might seem like an impersonal business hotel can actually work out to a good deal for families, if you can snag a room when a big convention isn't forcing up downtown rates. This spot provides modern accommodations with lots of room for families or claustrophobes. Built in 1988, the neoclassical high-rise is topped with a distinctive neon bull's-eye that's visible from far away. Every room is a suite, with a king or two doubles in the bedroom, plus a sofa bed in the living/dining area; each has convenient features like a kitchenette and a dining table that converts into a work area. All rooms open onto a 12-story atrium filled with palm trees, koi ponds, and a bubbling fountain; each also has a city or bay view. Located 1 block from Seaport Village and 8 blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter, the Embassy Suites may be a second-tier choice of convention groups (after the pricier Grand Hyatt and Marriott), but it provides solid extras like a full breakfast and complimentary evening cocktail hour.
