During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

McLoughlin House
Oregon City's most famous citizen, retired Hudson's Bay Company chief factor, John McLoughlin, helped found this mill town on the banks of the Willamette River in 1829. By the 1840s, immigrants were pouring into Oregon, and McLoughlin provided food, seeds, and tools to many. Upon retirement in 1846, McLoughlin moved to Oregon City, where he built what was at that time the most luxurious home in Oregon. Today McLoughlin's house is a National Historic Site and is furnished as it would have been in McLoughlin's days. Many of the pieces on display are original to the house.

End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
With its three Paul Bunyan-size wagons parked in the middle of Abernethy Green (the official end of the Oregon Trail), this interpretive center is impossible to miss. Inside the first of the giant wagons, you'll find an exhibit hall, hands-on area, and gift shop. After looking around this first wagon, you'll then be led through the next one by costumed interpreters who explain the difficulties of provisioning for the overland trek. The third wagon houses a multimedia presentation based on three Oregon Trail diaries.

Elk Rock Garden of the Bishop's Close
Set on a steep hillside above the Willamette River between Portland and Lake Oswego, this was once a private garden but was donated to the local Episcopal bishop of Oregon on the condition that it be opened to the public. The mature gardens are at their best through the spring and early summer. There's also an excellent view of Mount Hood from the grounds.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

The Westin Portland
This is one of the newest business hotels in downtown Portland and is by far the most stylish, combining contemporary styling with original works by regional artists. Guest rooms are set up primarily for business travelers and are among the most attractive and luxurious standard guest rooms in the city. Bathrooms are large and have separate tubs and showers. There are even CD players in all the rooms (plus a few CDs for your listening pleasure). If you'd prefer a room with a little more light, ask for a corner room; if you need extra work space, opt for one of the "guest office" rooms. The hotel's restaurant is plush and stylish (complete with curtained booths), but the food can be inconsistent.

McMenamins Kennedy School
The Kennedy School is from the same folks who turned Portland's old poor farm into the most entertaining and unusual B&B in the state (see the listing for McMenamins Edgefield, below, in section 5 of this chapter). This inn, located well north of stylish Irvington in an up-and-coming neighborhood that dates from the early years of the 20th century, was an elementary school from 1915 to 1975. In the guest rooms you'll still find the original blackboards and great big school clocks (you know, like the one you used to watch so expectantly). However, the classroom/guest rooms here now have their own bathrooms, so you won't have to raise your hand or walk down the hall. On the premises you'll also find a restaurant, a beer garden, a movie theater pub, a cigar bar, and a big hot soaking pool.

Doubletree Hotel Portland Columbia River
Attractive landscaping and an interesting low-rise design that's slightly reminiscent of a Northwest Coast Indian longhouse give this convention hotel a very resortlike feel and have kept it popular for many years. Although rush-hour traffic problems can make this a bad choice if you're here to explore Portland, it's a good location if you plan to visit Mount St. Helens. You're also within walking distance of a large shopping mall. Guest rooms are large, though rather nondescript, but many of them have views of the Columbia River. Be sure to ask for one of these.
