Shut for a year due to expansion work, the Walker Art Center will reopen in early 2005 with nearly twice its original space for exhibiting edgy, contemporary art: paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and multimedia installations. The renovation will add a new restaurant, cafe, and gift shop. Across Vineland Place is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the largest urban sculpture garden in the country. A variety of 20th-century sculpture shares space with horticultural plantings, including the famous "Spoonbridge and Cherry." Allow 2 hours for both.

Nicollet Island Inn
Just across from the Mississippi River, this lovely inn was once an 1893 window shade and blind company; it was converted into an inn in the 1970s. The individually decorated rooms are furnished with offbeat originality; all rooms offer VCRs and freshly baked cookies, and some have Jacuzzis. Radisson Riverfront St. Paul
Located downtown, overlooking the Mississippi River, the Radisson is topped by the Twin Cities' only revolving restaurant. Make sure to request an upper or corner room -- the others tend to be noisy.

Saint Paul Hotel
This beautiful, exquisitely decorated hotel, housed in a 1910 building, makes for a great romantic getaway.
