During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Passport
An attraction more suited to a theme park, Passport offers visitors two "experiences": Time Elevator America and Oceanarium 2. Both are 20-minute movies, shown in theatres with seats that bump and twist and special effects such as mist and wind. There are stationary seats, too. Neither has any real Baltimore ties -- although opening footage was shot on Baltimore's Federal Hill, neighborhoods, and the National Aquarium. Time Elevator tells of a man traveling through time back to colonial days. It's well acted with a story that's more engrossing than Oceanarium. But if you love fish, Oceanarium is a better choice for its cinematography. Neither is up to Disney quality, but it's a fun if pricey diversion in the Inner Harbor. A new show begins every 15 minutes. You can purchase tickets for the next show or in advance in person or online.

Baltimore Zoo
It may be the third oldest zoo in the United States, but the staff here is doing their best to make it one of the most modern. Some 2,000 animals live here, including polar bears, prairie dogs, penguins, and tigers. As part of a $60 million renovation, cages in the Main Valley are being replaced with more modern habitats, and visitors will get a better look behind the scenes. Several exhibits are newly renovated, including the Polar Bear Watch, Chimpanzee Forest, Leopard Lair, and African Watering Hole. The children's zoo is a must-see with its lily pads, tree slide, farm animals, and Maryland wilderness exhibit. Plan to spend a few hours here. Bring a stroller for the little ones because that last hill to the exit can be daunting on a hot summer day.

Creative Alliance
Brand new in 2003, this venue celebrates local arts in its galleries and performance space. Contemporary art in any media is on display here. The auditorium is the site of a Wednesday night classic film series as well as special events. The resident Loyal Opposition comedy troupe, Sound Foundation new music group, and the Charm City Kitty Club play here at least once a quarter. The Baltimore Mandolin Society also holds its annual concert here. Though much of the work is edgy, more mainstream works also have their space. It's worth going out of your way to visit if you'd like a taste of the Baltimore arts scene. The schedule is on their website.

Abacrombie
Guest performers with the Baltimore Symphony often choose this inviting B&B across from the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Not only is it convenient to the Meyerhoff, Lyric Opera House, and the Maryland Institute College of Art, it has a touch of European hospitality. Guest rooms, decorated with vintage furnishings and prints dressed with big bows, are cheery and bright. All have private baths. The owners, former Ritz-Carlton employees, have added luxurious touches, including robes and fine toiletries. Ask for a room at the end of the hall if you like more spacious accommodations. These have the most square footage and biggest windows. Most of these also have double sinks in a niche outside the bathrooms. The other double rooms are only a bit smaller. Single rooms are tiny with charming beds. Two connect to double rooms, perfect for families. Rollaway beds are available. A small restaurant and bar has just been opened on the ground floor.

Celie's Waterfront Inn
Walk down the Sally walk of this 18th-century town house and enter a quiet refuge. It's one of only a few bed-and-breakfasts in Baltimore, and it's delightful. Each room has its own charms: two have a fireplace, whirlpool, and harbor views. Two inside rooms are particularly quiet, as they overlook the flower-filled courtyard. Two rooms with city views as nice as the harbor view have private balconies and whirlpool tubs. One ground-floor room has its own courtyard. New owners have added two suites (with living and dining rooms and full kitchens), which can accommodate four and six comfortably. Have breakfast in your room, on the deck, or in the garden.

Brookshire Suites
This building was once a parking garage, but only the tallest guests might notice the slightly lower ceilings. The rooms are comfortable with room to spread out. The suites are even more spacious, although bedroom space has been sacrificed for more room in the sitting area. The Cloud Club has a terrific view and lots of comfortable seating and TVs if you need even more room to stretch out. What makes this an even better deal for touring families is the full, hot breakfast buffet served every morning. The hotel is a block away from the Inner Harbor on one of the city's main arteries. It's easy to find and a good location for stepping out to see the sights.
