During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Mission San Gabriel Arcangel
Founded in 1771, Mission San Gabriel Arcangel retains its original facade, notable for its high oblong windows and large capped buttresses said to have been influenced by the cathedral in Cordova, Spain. The mission's self-contained compound encompasses an aqueduct, a cemetery, a tannery, and a working winery. Within the church stands a copper font with the dubious distinction of being the first one used to baptize a Native Californian. The most notable contents of the mission's museum are Native American paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross, done on sailcloth, with colors made from crushed desert flower petals.

Skirball Cultural Center
This strikingly modern museum/cultural center is quick to remind us that Jewish history is about more than the Holocaust. Nestled in the Sepulveda Pass uphill from the Getty Center, the Skirball explores American Jewish life, American democratic values, and the pursuit of the American Dream -- a theme shared by many immigrant groups. The Skirball's core exhibits chronicle the journey of the Jewish people through the ages, with emphasis on American Jewry. Related events are held here throughout the year; one recent highlight was a rollicking festival of klezmer music (a traditional Jewish folk style). Call for free docent-led tour times.

The Arboretum of Los Angeles County
Tucked into the hillsides of the San Gabriel Mountains, this sprawling horticultural and botanical center was formerly the estate of silver magnate "Lucky" Baldwin -- the man responsible for bringing horse racing to Southern California -- who lived until 1909 on these lushly planted 127 acres overlooking the Santa Anita racetrack. You might recognize Baldwin's red-and-white Queen Anne cottage from the opening sequence of Fantasy Island ("de plane, de plane"); the gardens are also a favorite location for movie filming and local weddings. In addition to spectacular flora (every continent is represented here), the Arboretum boasts a bevy of resident peafowl who seem unafraid of humans -- one of the best treats here is being up close when the peacocks, attempting to impress passing hens, unfold their brilliant rainbow plumage. Avid gardeners will want to visit the nursery-like gift shop on the way out.

W Los Angeles
Design-savvy hipsters looking for cutting-edge style and familiar comforts will enjoy this 15-story, all-suite hotel near UCLA. The former Westwood Marquis underwent a transformation in 2000 under new owners, W Hotels, the "boutique" hotel brand backed by corporate giant Starwood Hotels. Hidden behind a severe concrete exterior, this oasis-like property has always had advantages: an all-suite configuration, 2 lush acres of greenery, and eye-catching '60s architectural detailing that's been liberated from its long-standing Sheetrock prison. Each large two-room suite features bold, angular furnishings in dark African wenge wood, accented with gray carpeting and soft plum textiles. Luxuries include divinely dressed beds, two 27-inch TVs, and two CD players. The bathrooms are spacious but unremarkable, save for inviting waffle-weave robes.Like the all-black-clad staff (who run around with silly Secret Service-style headsets), the public spaces are dressed to impress. Mojo restaurant serves Latin-inspired cuisine and colorful cocktails to uberstylish industry types, but ends up being more flash than substance. Nightlife impresario Rande Gerber runs the bar, Whiskey Blue, which pretty much guarantees a hipster scene on weekend nights. The well-furnished gardenlike pool area has its own outdoor cafe. The full-service spa will even schedule massages in the boldly striped poolside cabanas.Facilities: Restaurant; cocktail lounge; 2 outdoor heated pools; full-service spa and exercise room; concierge; car-rental desk; courtesy car; business center; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry-cleaning service; video and CD libraries.

Beach House at Hermosa Beach
Sporting a Cape Cod style that suits the on-the-sand location, this luxurious, romantic inn is comprised of beautifully designed and outfitted split-level studio suites. Every bright, sunny unit comes with a plush, furnished living room with a wood-burning fireplace (Duraflame logs provided) and entertainment center; a microkitchen with china and flatware for four; an elevated sleeping niche with a down-dressed king bed, a second TV, and a generous work area; an extralarge bathroom with an extradeep soaking tub, a separate shower, cotton robes, and Aveda products; and a furnished balcony, many of which overlook the beach (believe me -- it's worth the extra money to score a beachfront room). While sofas convert into second beds, the unit configuration is best suited to couples rather than families; more than three is too many. Despite the summertime carnival atmosphere of the Strand, the Beach House keeps serene with double-paned windows and noise-insulated walls. An excellent light breakfast is served in the sunny breakfast room overlooking The Strand. The attentive staff has an easygoing attitude that suits the property perfectly. While L.A.'s city center is at least a half-hour drive away, Hermosa is airport-convenient and ideal for a beach getaway. In room: A/C, 2 TVs, stereo w/5-disk CD changer, dataport, stocked kitchenette w/microwave, coffeemaker, stovetop, fridge, hair dryer, iron, menu of spa services.

Inn at Playa del Rey
A half-hour drive from L.A. proper, my favorite L.A. B&B is less than ideal for sightseers with packed itineraries, but great for those looking for romance, a relaxed small-town vibe, or airport convenience. Only 5 minutes from LAX, the pampering inn is as much a sanctuary from the city as the protected wetlands outside the back door. From the street, the contemporary structure looks like a set of condos; inside, it glows with its true character. Fresh salty breezes and the soft chatter of waterfowl fill a spacious yet cozy fireplace lounge, whose long veranda overlooks peaceful marshland. Hiking trails wind through the wildlife preserve; a wooden observation platform 50 yards out is ideal for contemplation, bird-watching, or spying on sailboats that pass through the channel. A beach suitable for swimming is a short walk away, and bicycles are on hand for cruising a coastal path. The impeccably decorated, amenity-laden guest rooms are outfitted in a classy-yet-casual, sophisticated style that evokes the best of Nantucket or Santa Barbara. Country-chic furnishings, snuggly comforters, and plush bathrobes and towels are on hand. Luxuries include DirecTV hidden in handsome armoires and bathrooms. Most rooms have balconies; other options include whirlpool tubs and fireplaces. The ultimate in romance are the spacious View Suites, whose two-sided fireplaces cast a heavenly glow on both the luxuriously made bed and the inviting double Jacuzzi. A garden hot tub is available for those booking simpler accommodations.
