Edgar Allen Poe House
In this tiny west Baltimore house, Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of his first works. Poe lived here from 1833 to 1835 with his grandmother, aunt, and cousin Virginia, whom he later married. The 2 1/2 story rowhouse contains five rooms, including the tiny garret where Poe slept and wrote. There are portraits, Poe memorabilia, period furniture, changing exhibits, and a video presentation. The house is located on a tiny, one-way street heading south. There is no house number, but you will see a black antique street lamp out front and two markers on the house. Don't try to walk here from downtown. Take a car or cab. Definitely call ahead to verify hours.

Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center
Baltimorean Eubie Blake, ragtime pianist and Broadway composer, is remembered in this small museum on Howard Street's Antique Row. Exhibits also feature local musicians Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway and the local arts and cultural scene. Because the focus is music, most of the space is devoted to recitals and programs for children. Open mic is held last Thursday of the month at 7pm; the Eubie Blake Legacy Band has open rehearsal Saturday at 11:30am. There usually isn't a lot to see, and not really very much about Blake himself. Insider tip: Talk to the docents here; many of them knew Blake or Calloway personally.

Edgar Allan Poe's Grave
Three modest memorials in this old graveyard recall the poet who wrote "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Raven" (the only poem to inspire an NFL team's name). After his mysterious death at age 40 in 1849, Poe's relatives erected a small gravestone. Before the stone could be installed, a train crashed through the monument yard and destroyed it. In the century since, the site has been adorned with three newer monuments: the main memorial, which features a bas-relief bust of Poe; a small gravestone adorned with a raven at Poe's original burial lot; and a plaque placed by the French, who, thanks to the poet Baudelaire, enjoy some of the best translations of Poe's works. The poet is remembered on his birthday every January 19 when a mysterious "Poe Toaster" leaves half a bottle of cognac and three roses at the grave. On the weekend closest to Poe's birthday, a party is held in his honor. A Halloween tour is also scheduled each year.

Pier 5 Hotel
Be prepared for something wild when you walk into the lobby of the Pier 5. It's bright and airy, and it's fun to settle back into those offbeat sofas. The rooms continue the lobby's purple, red, and yellow color scheme, though much quieter and more refined. Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore
If you love grand old hotels with modern conveniences, this is the one for you. The Lord Baltimore opened in 1928. It has changed hands several times, but this 23-story French Renaissance-style hotel retains its old-fashioned charm. The entrance features marble columns, hand-carved artwork, brass fixtures, and chandelier. The small but quiet guest rooms are newly refurbished in soft colors. Parlor suites, which offer extra room, and a plaza level for those who must be pampered, have been added. There's a B&B package for added convenience. In the heart of the theater and financial districts, it's convenient to Mount Vernon attractions with the Inner Harbor only 5 blocks away.

Renaissance Harborplace Hotel
The Renaissance is in the middle of everything. Business travelers find it convenient to local firms, the convention center, and restaurants. Tourists like its location across the street from Harborplace and the Inner Harbor. It's part of The Gallery at Harborplace, five floors of shops topped by an office tower. Rooms are the biggest in Baltimore with comfortable furniture and wide windows that really open overlooking the Inner Harbor. Renovated in 2003, the lighter colors make the huge rooms seem even more spacious. Its views are good, especially on the upper floors. If you want a comfy chair, ask for a king unit. There's a concierge level with a lounge where breakfast and afternoon drinks and hors d'oeuvres are served. Need extra luxury?
