During your Newark vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Sony Wonder Technology Lab
Not as much of an infomercial as you'd expect. Both kids and adults love this four-level high-tech science and technology center, which explores communications and information technology. You can experiment with robotics, explore the human body through medical imaging, edit a music video, mix a hit song, design a video game, and save the day at an environmental command center. The lab also features the first high-definition interactive theater in the United States. Admission is absolutely free; this place is extremely popular, however, so it's wise to make reservations in advance. Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance by calling tel. 212/833-5414 on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 11am and 4pm. Otherwise, you may not get in, or you may get tickets that require you to return at a different time.

Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a black Puerto Rican, set himself to accumulating materials about blacks in America, and his massive collection -- one of the largest collections of African-American materials in the world -- is now housed and preserved at this research branch of the New York Public Library. The Exhibition Hall, the Latimer/Edison Gallery, and the Reading Room host changing exhibits related to black culture, such as Lest We Forget: The Triumph over Slavery and Masterpieces of African Motherhood. A rich calendar of talks and performing arts events is also part of the continuing program. Make an appointment for a guided tour so you can see the 1930s murals by Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas; it'll be worth your while. Academics and others interested in a more complete look at the center's holdings can preview what's available online. Call to inquire about current exhibitions and information on tours and public programs.

Children's Museum of the Arts
Interactive workshop programs for children ages 1 to 12 and their families are the attraction here. Kids dabble in puppet making and computer drawing or join in singalongs and live performances. Also look for rotating exhibitions of the museum's permanent collection featuring WPA work. Call or check the website for the current exhibition and activities schedule.

The Library Hotel
New York is not Las Vegas, so I'm usually wary of the hotel as high concept, but in this case, the concept really works: a hotel located 1 block from the New York Public Library, each of whose 10 guest room floors is dedicated to 1 of the 10 major categories of the Dewey Decimal System. When I visited the hotel I was appropriately booked into a "Geography and Travel" room. There I was greeted with books such as Barcelona, by Robert Hughes, and Bella Tuscany, by Frances Mayes. The most disappointing thing about all those books is that I was only staying 1 night and didn't have the chance to read any of them. Still, there was something about having them by my bed; perhaps their soothing aura comforted me. Overall, the hotel has a pleasing, informal feel. Guest rooms, which come in three categories, petite (really small), deluxe, and junior suites, feature mahogany built-ins, generous desks, and immaculate marble bathrooms; all are extremely comfortable. The Library's public spaces -- a reading room where wine and cheese and a complimentary breakfast are served daily, a writer's den with a fireplace and flat-screen television, and a rooftop terrace -- all help make The Library a welcome refuge in the heart of the city.

Affinia Dumont
After a $15-million renovation in 2003, the former Dumont Plaza Hotel reopened as the all-suite Affinia Dumont and is probably New York's only fitness-focused suite hotel. Here, instead of those basic New York City guide magazines stocked in the rooms, you get a choice of Sports Illustrated, Shape, or Men's Fitness. Plus, when you book a room, you can request a complimentary "Fit Kit" that will be prepared based on your needs for an in-room workout. But you might want to venture out and to the hotel's terrific fitness spa, complete with all the most advanced weights, cardio equipment, and massage and skin treatments. You might even bump into a few gap-toothed hockey players in town to play the Rangers, or 7-foot, 6-inch basketball player Yao Ming, who had a bed custom-made for his extra-long frame. But even if you don't want to break a sweat during your stay, the hotel features amenities that make it a very attractive option. The spacious suites range from studios to two-bedrooms, and all include full kitchens, at least one 27-inch TV, a large desk with an ergonomic chair, the "Affinia Bed," with a custom-designed mattress and four-selection "pillow menu," and a minibar stocked with unusual options, such as health elixirs with names like Depth Recharger or Virtual Buddha. The hotel is a bit away from the center of Midtown, but still within easy walking distance to Herald Square shopping, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and Grand Central Station, making it a very welcome addition to the hotel scene.

Holiday Inn Downtown/SoHo
This Holiday Inn is actually on the northern edge of Chinatown, but its just-off-SoHo location is perfect for hipsters who want access to the ultrachic scene without its high price tag. It's everything you'd expect from this good-value chain: clean, well outfitted, reliable, and comfortable. The guest rooms are standard but have everything you need. Doubles are a good-value bet for small families or sharing friends. You'll find Asian touches throughout the hotel -- a nod to the brink-of-Chinatown location -- and a well-respected Asian restaurant. Rack rates are high, but it's easy to snag a discount or score a room on the low end with advance booking.
