During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Riverwalk Golf Club
Completely redesigned by Ted Robinson and Ted Robinson Jr., these links wander along the Mission Valley floor and are the most convenient courses for anyone staying downtown or near the beaches. Replacing the private Stardust Golf Club, the course reopened in 1998, sporting a slick, upscale new clubhouse, four lakes with waterfalls (in play on 13 of the 27 holes), open, undulating fairways, and one peculiar feature: trolley tracks! The bright red trolley speeds through now and then, but doesn't prove too distracting. Nonresident greens fees, including cart, are $79 Monday through Thursday, $89 Friday, and $99 weekends; twilight and bargain evening rates are available.

San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum
One of the country's few multisport museums, the slick Hall of Champions has been a destination for sports fans since 1961. The museum highlights more than 40 professional and amateur sports. More than 25 exhibits surround a centerpiece statue, the Discus Thrower. One particularly interesting exhibit is devoted to athletes with disabilities. You can see it all in under an hour.

Botanical Building and Lily Pond
This serene park within the park is one of my favorite hideouts. Ferns, orchids, impatiens, begonias, and other plants -- about 2,100 tropical and flowering varieties, plus rotating exhibits -- are sheltered beneath a domed lath house. The graceful 250-foot-long building, part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, is one of the world's largest wood lath structures, and emerged from a complete renovation in 2002. Kids love the "touch and smell" garden and the smelly bog of carnivorous plants. The lily pond out front attracts sun worshipers, painters, and street entertainers.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the San Diego area, including:

Glorietta Bay Inn
Right across the street and somewhat in the (figurative) shadow of the Hotel Del, this pretty white hotel consists of the charmingly historic John D. Spreckels mansion (1908) and several younger, motel-style buildings. Only 11 rooms are in the mansion, which boasts original fixtures, a grand staircase, and old-fashioned wicker furniture; the guest rooms are also decked out in antiques, and have a romantic and nostalgic ambience.Rooms and suites in the 1950s annexes are much less expensive but were upgraded from motel-plain to better match the main house's classy ambience (though lacking the mansion's superluxe featherbeds); some have kitchenettes and marina views. The least expensive units are small and have parking-lot views. Wherever your room is, you'll enjoy the inn's trademark personalized service, including extra-helpful staffers who remember your name and happily offer dining and sightseeing recommendations or arrange tee times; special attention to return guests and families with toddlers; and a friendly continental breakfast. In addition to offering bikes and boat rentals on Glorietta Bay across the street, the hotel is within easy walking distance of the beach, golf, tennis, watersports, shopping, and dining. Rooms in the mansion are booked early, but are worth the extra effort and expense.

The Cottage
Built in 1913, this B&B at the end of a residential cul-de-sac is surrounded by a garden, and features a private hideaway -- "the cottage" -- tucked behind a homestead-style house. There's an herb garden in front, birdbaths, and a walkway lined with climbing roses. The cottage has a king-size bed, a living room with a wood-burning stove and a queen-size sofa bed, and a charming kitchen with a coffeemaker. The guest room in the main house features a king-size bed. Both accommodations are filled with fresh flowers and antiques put to clever uses, and each has a private entrance. Owner Carol Emerick (she used to run an antiques store -- and it shows!) serves a scrumptious breakfast, complete with the morning paper. Guests are welcome to use the dining room and parlor in the main house, where they sometimes light a fire and rev up the 19th-century player piano. The Cottage is located 5 blocks from the cafes of Mission Hills and Hillcrest, and a short drive from Balboa Park. Book early for this find.

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego
A second, 33-story tower was recently added to the Grand Hyatt, doubling the number of guest rooms and greatly increasing the facility's meeting space. San Diego's largest hotel continues to be one of the city's most successful operations, even though a behemoth with 1,625 rooms can't offer much in the way of personalized attention -- in fact, complaints about tardy room service are common. All the public spaces are grand and airy, sporting a limestone-and-marble neoclassical theme; there aren't many subtle notes here, the opulence is never understated. But you'll enjoy all the expense-account amenities, including a 40th-floor lounge that offers stunning views over the city and San Diego Bay (the Hyatt is the tallest waterfront lodging on the West Coast). Guest rooms are quiet with high-quality but standard Hyatt-issue furnishings. Bathrooms have ample counter space, and the facility gets kudos for superior service for travelers with disabilities. Request a corner unit for optimal views. The hotel is generally the first choice of large conventions, so rack rates can be deceptively high. Don't let them scare you off if you want to stay here -- weekend rates in particular can be a great deal.
