During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Passport
An attraction more suited to a theme park, Passport offers visitors two "experiences": Time Elevator America and Oceanarium 2. Both are 20-minute movies, shown in theatres with seats that bump and twist and special effects such as mist and wind. There are stationary seats, too. Neither has any real Baltimore ties -- although opening footage was shot on Baltimore's Federal Hill, neighborhoods, and the National Aquarium. Time Elevator tells of a man traveling through time back to colonial days. It's well acted with a story that's more engrossing than Oceanarium. But if you love fish, Oceanarium is a better choice for its cinematography. Neither is up to Disney quality, but it's a fun if pricey diversion in the Inner Harbor. A new show begins every 15 minutes. You can purchase tickets for the next show or in advance in person or online.

Creative Alliance
Brand new in 2003, this venue celebrates local arts in its galleries and performance space. Contemporary art in any media is on display here. The auditorium is the site of a Wednesday night classic film series as well as special events. The resident Loyal Opposition comedy troupe, Sound Foundation new music group, and the Charm City Kitty Club play here at least once a quarter. The Baltimore Mandolin Society also holds its annual concert here. Though much of the work is edgy, more mainstream works also have their space. It's worth going out of your way to visit if you'd like a taste of the Baltimore arts scene. The schedule is on their website.

American Visionary Art Museum
Look for the "Whirligig," a 55-foot multicolored, wind-powered sculpture at the front of this curvaceous building. Visionary art is created by people without artistic training but feel compelled to draw, paint, or build a ship with matchsticks. Everything is fascinating; some can be quite troubling. And the artists' stories can be as interesting as their art. The museum's three stories contain rooms that are as soothing as the art is vivid. From the moment you set your eyes on Emery Blagdon's "Healing Machines" mobile hanging down three floors, you'll be entranced. Some exhibits are too strong for children, and the museum will alert you about that. Other exhibits are a joy that children would love. A sculpture barn and sculpture garden are filled with other delights. The AVAM is also home to Joy America Café and an offbeat gift shop on the first floor. AVAM is adding new exhibit space and sculpture garden due to open in 2004.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Baltimore area, including:

Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel
The Marriott dominates a prime piece of waterfront -- even though it's more than a few steps from the city's best-known attractions and the convention center. Luckily, the water taxi stops nearby. The hotel rises 32 floors in a developing area known as Harbor East. The rooms are pretty standard, with the added pleasures of down duvets and soft, pillow-top mattresses -- and, of course, that skyline view. The best views are from the 30th, 31st, and 32nd floors, and they come with a premium price. These concierge rooms have all the standard amenities plus deluxe continental breakfast and hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the Concierge Lounge. Corner rooms offer two views of the city and cost extra. For children, the hotel offers cribs and rollaway beds at no charge and a kids' menu in the restaurants.

Inner Harbor Courtyard by Marriott
Overshadowed in size by its big sister, the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, this Marriott won't be outdone for service or comfortable rooms, which are a good size with desks, comfortable beds, and well-equipped bathrooms. There are eight rooms with Jacuzzis and 10 corner suites. It's serious enough for business travelers but casual enough for families on vacation. Although it's really not in the middle of major attractions, it's on the water taxi routes and located near the newly developing promenade, so getting to the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, or even Fort McHenry is easy.

Brookshire Suites
This building was once a parking garage, but only the tallest guests might notice the slightly lower ceilings. The rooms are comfortable with room to spread out. The suites are even more spacious, although bedroom space has been sacrificed for more room in the sitting area. The Cloud Club has a terrific view and lots of comfortable seating and TVs if you need even more room to stretch out. What makes this an even better deal for touring families is the full, hot breakfast buffet served every morning. The hotel is a block away from the Inner Harbor on one of the city's main arteries. It's easy to find and a good location for stepping out to see the sights.
