Trinity Church
Serving God and Mammon, this Wall Street house of worship -- with neo-Gothic flying buttresses, beautiful stained-glass windows, and vaulted ceilings -- was designed by Richard Upjohn and consecrated in 1846. At that time, its 280-foot spire dominated the skyline. Its main doors, embellished with biblical scenes, were inspired in part by Ghiberti's famed doors on Florence's Baptistery. The historic Episcopal church stood strong while office towers crumbled around it on September 11, 2001; however, an electronic organ has temporarily replaced the historic pipe organ, which was severely damaged by dust and debris. The gates to the historic church currently serve as an impromptu memorial to the victims of 9/11, with countless tokens of remembrance left by both locals and visitors alike.The church runs a brief tour daily at 2pm (a 2nd Sun tour follows the 11:15am Eucharist); groups of five or more should call tel. 212/602-0872 to reserve. There's a small museum at the end of the left aisle displaying documents (including the 1697 church charter from King William III), photographs, replicas of the Hamilton-Burr duel pistols, and other items. Surrounding the church is a churchyard whose monuments read like an American history book: a tribute to martyrs of the American Revolution, Alexander Hamilton, Robert Fulton, and many more. Lined with benches, this makes a wonderful picnic spot on warm days.Also part of Trinity Church is St. Paul's Chapel, at Broadway and Fulton Street, New York's only surviving pre-Revolutionary church, and a transition shelter for homeless men until it was transformed into a relief center after September 11; it returned to its former duties in mid-2002. Built by Thomas McBean, with a templelike portico and fluted Ionic columns supporting a massive pediment, the chapel resembles London's St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Brooklyn Tabernacle
Under the direction of passionate orator Pastor Jim Cymbala and his choral-director wife, Carol, this nondenominational Christian revival church has grown into one of the largest -- with a congregation of nearly 10,000 from all walks of city life -- and most renowned inner-city churches in the nation. Folks come from all over the world to see the 275-voice, four-time Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, one of the nation's most celebrated gospel choirs.Brooklyn Tabernacle relocated from Flatbush Avenue to 392 Fulton St., on Fulton Mall in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, in mid-2002. The gloriously renovated 1918 building is the fourth-largest theatrical space in the five boroughs, and seats nearly 4,000 for each service. Still, come early for a prime seat, especially when the choir sings (at the noon and 4pm Sun services).

Museum of Sex
How many cities can claim their own Museum of Sex? This one debuted in 2002 and despite its provocative title, offers a studied, historical look at the history of sex in our culture. The museum's first exhibit, NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex in America, featured displays about S&M and 19th-century brothels and videos of Times Square in its sleazy heyday of the 1970s. In 2004, Sex Among the Lotus: 2,500 Years of Chinese Erotic Obsession opened, displaying explicit imagery dating from the 2nd century B.C. Don't miss a trip through the gift shop -- definitely not your typical museum shop. How about a $1,375 snakeskin souvenir to show your friends back home? Note: Many of the displays are very graphic, so the museum may not be for everyone.

Skyline Hotel
This nice, newly renovated motor hotel offers predictable comforts and some uncommon extras -- inexpensive storage parking ($8 per day) and a lovely indoor pool -- that make it a very good value. A pleasant lobby leads to motel-standard rooms that were, thankfully, recently renovated, and are bigger than most in this price range. There are two room categories: standard, with two twin beds, and deluxe, with either a king bed with sofa or a queen bed. The deluxe with king and sofa is best for families. They boast decent-size closets, small work desks (in most), and double-paned windows that open to let fresh air in, and shut out a surprising amount of street noise when closed. Some rooms have brand-new bathrooms, but the older ones are still fine. Everything is very well kept. Another plus for the family is the pool, which has a nicely tiled deck and plush deck chairs, but it's only open limited hours, so call ahead if it matters.

Le Parker Meridien
Not many hotels in New York can rival the attributes of this hotel: Its location on 57th Street, not too far from Times Square and a close walk to Central Park and the shopping of Fifth Avenue, is practically perfect; the 17,000 square-foot fitness center, called Gravity, features state-of-the-art equipment, a basketball and a racquetball court, a spa, and a rooftop pool; three excellent restaurants, including Norma's , where breakfast is an art, and the aptly named Burger Joint , rated by many as the best hamburger in the city; a gorgeous, bustling lobby that also serves as a public space; and elevators with televisions that continuously show Tom and Jerry and Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, and Charlie Chaplin shorts that are a wonder for the kids. The spacious hotel rooms, though a bit on the Ikea side, have a fun feel to them, with hidden drawers and swirling television platforms, inventively exploiting an economical use of space. Rooms have wood platform beds with feather beds; built-ins that include large work desks, stylish Aeron chairs, free high-speed Internet, and 32-inch flat-screen televisions with VCR/CD and DVD players. The slate and limestone bathrooms are large, but unfortunately come only with shower. A stay at Le Parker Meridien is definitely a New York experience in itself.

Affinia Dumont
After a $15-million renovation in 2003, the former Dumont Plaza Hotel reopened as the all-suite Affinia Dumont and is probably New York's only fitness-focused suite hotel. Here, instead of those basic New York City guide magazines stocked in the rooms, you get a choice of Sports Illustrated, Shape, or Men's Fitness. Plus, when you book a room, you can request a complimentary "Fit Kit" that will be prepared based on your needs for an in-room workout. But you might want to venture out and to the hotel's terrific fitness spa, complete with all the most advanced weights, cardio equipment, and massage and skin treatments. You might even bump into a few gap-toothed hockey players in town to play the Rangers, or 7-foot, 6-inch basketball player Yao Ming, who had a bed custom-made for his extra-long frame. But even if you don't want to break a sweat during your stay, the hotel features amenities that make it a very attractive option. The spacious suites range from studios to two-bedrooms, and all include full kitchens, at least one 27-inch TV, a large desk with an ergonomic chair, the "Affinia Bed," with a custom-designed mattress and four-selection "pillow menu," and a minibar stocked with unusual options, such as health elixirs with names like Depth Recharger or Virtual Buddha. The hotel is a bit away from the center of Midtown, but still within easy walking distance to Herald Square shopping, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and Grand Central Station, making it a very welcome addition to the hotel scene.
