During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Utah State Historical Society Museum
Housed in the waiting room of the 1909 Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Depot, this museum exhibits historic artifacts, photos, and paintings. You'll see full-size replicas of a Conestoga wagon and a Mormon handcart, as well as one of the artificial hearts developed in 1976 by the University of Utah's Dr. Robert Jarvik. The large gift shop offers a variety of western gifts and toys, plus an excellent selection of books. Allow a half hour.

Family History Library
This incredible facility contains what is probably the world's largest collection of genealogical records under one roof. The growing collection is composed of a substantial number of records from around the United States, fairly comprehensive data from Scotland and England, and information from many other countries. Most of the records, which date from about 1550 to 1920, are from governments, various churches and other organizations, and individuals. The Mormons created such a huge genealogical library because they believe that families are united for eternity through marriage and other sacred ordinances given in the temples. These ordinances, such as baptism ceremonies, can be done on behalf of ancestors -- hence the interest in tracing all deceased family members. When you enter the library, help is available to assist with your research. There are forms you can fill out with any and all data you already know (so come prepared with copies of whatever you have), and you will be directed from there. An orientation is given to newcomers and includes a handout and a map of the library. Volunteers are stationed around the library to help with anything you need. Some of the records are in books, and many have been converted to microfilm, microfiche, and computer files. The volunteers will show you how to use any unfamiliar machines. One of the easiest ways to begin a search is to start with the place where your ancestors lived, because records are organized first by the geographical origin. From there, you can spend hours immersed in discovering the whos, whats, wheres, and whys of your family history -- we know, we did it!

University of Utah
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened the University of Deseret in 1850, just 2 1/2 years after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. It closed 2 years later, due to lack of funds and the greater need for primary education, but reopened in 1867 as a business academy. The name changed in 1892, and the growing school moved to its present location in 1900. The university now sprawls over 1,500 acres on the east side of the city. The university's Red Butte Garden and Arboretum (801/581-4747; www.redbuttegarden.org) features 50 acres of display gardens and another 100 acres in their natural state, with 4 miles of nature trails. Located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, this is a terrific spot to take a break from hectic city sightseeing. The gardens are open May through September, Monday through Saturday from 9am to 8pm, Sunday from 9am to 5pm; October through April, Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children 4 to 17 and seniors 60 and over. From downtown, drive east on 400 South, past the university entrance, continuing until 400 South becomes Foothill Drive; turn east on Wakara Way and continue to the entry drive. Allow 2 hours. The University is also home to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Utah Museum of Natural History.
