Museum of Television & Radio
If you can resist the allure of this museum, I'd wager you've spent the last 70 years in a bubble. You can watch and hear all the great personalities of TV and radio -- from Uncle Miltie to Johnny Carson to Jerry Seinfeld -- at a private console (available for 2 hr.). You can also conduct computer searches to pick out the great moments of history, viewing almost anything that made its way onto the airwaves, from the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show to the crumbling of the Berlin Wall (the collection consists of 75,000 programs and commercials). Selected programs are also presented in two theaters and two screening rooms, which can range from "Barbra Streisand: The Television Performances" to little-seen Monty Python episodes.

New Museum of Contemporary Art
This contemporary arts museum has moved closer to the mainstream in recent years, but it's only a safety margin in from the edge as far as most of us are concerned. Expect adventurous and well-curated exhibitions. The 2005 exhibition calendar had not been announced at press time, but previous schedules have included Portrait of the Lost Boys, New Zealander Jacqueline Fraser's moving narrative made of sumptuous fabric and fragile wire sculptures that examines the high incidence of suicide among teenage boys in New Zealand, and John Waters: Change of Life, photographs by the filmmaker who brought us Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. The Zenith Media Lounge, a digital and media arts technology space housing rotating installations, is free to the public. In 2006, the museum will move to a new 60,000-square-foot, $35-million home on the Bowery at Prince Street.

The Lucerne
This magnificent 1903 landmark building has had many incarnations over the years, including one as a dormitory for Columbia University students. But most recently it has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel, and that transformation has been a triumph on many levels. As a longtime resident of the Upper West Side, I can easily say the Lucerne best captures the feel of that very special neighborhood. Service here is impeccable, especially for a moderately priced hotel; the attentive GM is on top of every detail and everything is fresh and immaculate. The rooms are all comfortable and big enough for kings, queens, or two doubles, with attractive bathrooms complete with travertine counters. Some of the rooms have views not only of the Hudson River, but of one of my favorite pubs, the Dublin House. The suites are extra special here and include a kitchenette, a stocked minifridge, a microwave, and a sitting room with a sofa and extra television. In 2004, the highly rated Nice Matin opened in the hotel, offering room service or breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But if you don't want to dine there, you can sample some of the neighborhood food at nearby Zabar's or H&H Bagels.

Thirty Thirty
Thirty Thirty is just right for bargain-hunting travelers looking for a splash of style with an affordable price tag. The building -- which formerly housed the well-known Martha Washington women's hotel and the legendary nightclub Danceteria, where Madonna got her start -- was gutted, renovated, and redone with brand-new everything.The design-conscious tone is set in the loftlike industrial-modern lobby. Rooms are mostly on the smallish side, but do the trick for those who intend to spend their days out on the town rather than holed up here. They're done in a natural palette with a creative edge -- purplish carpet, khaki bedspread, woven wallpaper -- that comes together more attractively than you might expect. Configurations are split between twin/twins (great for friends), queens, and queen/queens (great for triples, budget-minded quads, or shares that want more spreading-out room). Nice features include cushioned headboards, firm mattresses, two-line phones, nice built-in wardrobes, and spacious, nicely tiled bathrooms. A few larger units have kitchenettes, great if you're staying in town for a while, as you'll appreciate the extra room and the fridge. No room service, but delivery is available from nearby restaurants.

Casablanca Hotel
A wealth of freebies -- including breakfast; coffee, tea, and cookies all day; wine and cheese most evenings; free passes to a nearby health club with pool and sauna; and use of Internet-access PCs -- make this stylish Moroccan-themed boutique hotel an excellent value. With vibrant mosaic tiles, warm woods and rattan, potted palms, and North African-themed art gracing the public spaces and guest rooms, the ambience is just right -- the only thing missing is Bogart and Bergman.The rooms aren't big, but they're nicely outfitted with comfortable platform beds, ceiling fans, two-line phones, bathrobes, and double-paned windows for quiet. The bathrooms are gorgeous and even the smallest is spacious enough for an oversize shower (request a tub when booking if you want one). Rick's Cafe is one of the city's finest hotel guest lounges, boasting a serve-yourself cappuccino machine, a fireplace, a big-screen TV, and PCs with T1 connectivity. A tiled second-floor courtyard is also ideal for summer lounging, and the rooftop deck is a perfect vantage for watching the New Year's ball drop. The staff is attentive, and the ambitious manager is constantly at work improving the property. Book well ahead, as an increasing number of happy repeat guests and corporate clients fill this place up fast.
