During your Newark vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

United Nations
In the midst of New York City is this working monument to world peace. The U.N. headquarters occupies 18 acres of international territory -- neither the city nor the United States has jurisdiction here -- along the East River from 42nd to 48th streets. Designed by an international team of architects (led by American Wallace K. Harrison and including Le Corbusier) and finished in 1952, the complex along the East River weds the 39-story glass slab Secretariat with the free-form General Assembly on beautifully landscaped grounds donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr. One hundred eighty nations use the facilities to arbitrate worldwide disputes.Guided tours leave every half-hour or so and last 45 minutes to an hour. Your guide will take you to the General Assembly Hall and the Security Council Chamber and introduce the history and activities of the United Nations and its related organizations. Along the tour you'll see donated objects and artwork, including charred artifacts that survived the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, stained-glass windows by Chagall, a replica of the first Sputnik, and a colorful mosaic called The Golden Rule, based on a Norman Rockwell drawing, which was a gift from the United States in 1985.If you take the time to wander the beautifully landscaped grounds, you'll be rewarded with lovely views and some surprises. The mammoth monument Good Defeats Evil, donated by the Soviet Union in 1990, fashioned a contemporary St. George slaying a dragon from parts of a Russian ballistic missile and an American Pershing missile. For an unusual treat try a multi-ethnic meal while visiting the UN at the Delegates' Dining Room (tel. 212/963-7625).

Sony Wonder Technology Lab
Not as much of an infomercial as you'd expect. Both kids and adults love this four-level high-tech science and technology center, which explores communications and information technology. You can experiment with robotics, explore the human body through medical imaging, edit a music video, mix a hit song, design a video game, and save the day at an environmental command center. The lab also features the first high-definition interactive theater in the United States. Admission is absolutely free; this place is extremely popular, however, so it's wise to make reservations in advance. Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance by calling tel. 212/833-5414 on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 11am and 4pm. Otherwise, you may not get in, or you may get tickets that require you to return at a different time.

Central Park Zoo/Tisch Children's Zoo
Here is a pleasant refuge within a refuge where lithe sea lions frolic in the central pool area with beguiling style, gigantic but graceful polar bears glide back and forth across a watery pool that has glass walls through which you can observe very large paws doing very smooth strokes, monkeys seem to regard those on the other side of the fence with knowing disdain, and in the hot and humid Tropic Zone, large colorful birds swoop around in freedom, sometimes landing next to nonplused visitors.Because of its small size, the zoo is at its best with its displays of smaller animals. The indoor multilevel Tropic Zone is a real highlight, its steamy rainforest home to everything from black-and-white colobus monkeys to Emerald tree boa constrictors to a leaf-cutter ant farm; look for the new dart poison frog exhibit, which is very cool. So is the large penguin enclosure in the Polar Circle, which is better than the one at San Diego's SeaWorld. In the Temperate Territory, look for the Asian red pandas (cousins to the big black-and-white ones), which look like the world's most beautiful raccoons. Despite their pool and piles of ice, however, the polar bears still look sad.The entire zoo is good for short attention spans; you can cover the whole thing in 1 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the crowds and how long you like to linger. It's also very kid-friendly, with lots of well-written and -illustrated placards that older kids can understand. For the littlest ones, there's the $6 million Tisch Children's Zoo. With pigs, llamas, potbellied pigs, and more, this petting zoo and playground is a real blast for the 5-and-under set.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Newark area, including:

The Phillips Club
Located in the heart of Lincoln Center, the Phillips Club was one of the first extended-stay hotels to open in Manhattan, but your stay doesn't have to be long to appreciate the hotel's many amenities. Offering spacious suites and one-bedroom apartments with full granite kitchens, the Phillips Club is less a hotel than a home away from home. The lobby is minimalist and maybe not as warm and welcoming as many hotels, but the staff is friendly and helpful. All units have that sophisticated New York City apartment feel and are equipped with big work desks with ergonomic chairs, sofa beds, and home entertainment centers; the nearby Tower Records store will even deliver videos to your room. The marble bathrooms are large, though not extravagant. There are washers and dryers on each floor, and though there is no restaurant on the premises, Balducci's, the gourmet grocery store located next door to the hotel, will deliver a full continental breakfast, sandwiches, or anything else they make to your room. Guests have access to the Reebok Sports Club/NY, one of the most exclusive and largest fitness clubs in Manhattan, which features 140,000 square feet of exercise space, including two basketball courts, an Olympic-size pool, and a 40-foot climbing wall. The apartment-like amenities make the hotel a good, though expensive, option for families or for anyone seeking a bit more control over their environment while visiting the city.

Broadway Inn
More like a San Francisco B&B than a Theater District hotel, this lovely, welcoming inn is a real charmer. The second-floor lobby sets the homey, easygoing tone with stocked bookcases, cushy seating, and cafe tables where breakfast is served. The rooms are basic but comfy, outfitted in an appealing neo-deco style with firm beds, good-quality linens and textiles, and nice bathrooms (about half have showers only). The whole place is impeccably kept. Two rooms have king beds and whirlpool tubs, but the standard doubles are just fine for two if you're looking to save some dough. If there are more than two of you, or you're staying a while, the suites -- with pullout sofa, microwave, minifridge, and lots of closet space -- are a great deal. The location can be noisy, but double-paned windows keep the rooms surprisingly peaceful; still, ask for a back-facing one if you're extra sensitive. The inn's biggest asset is its terrific staff, who go above and beyond the call to make guests happy; they'll even give you a hot line number upon check-in so you can call while you're on the town for directions, advice, and other assistance. Service just doesn't get any better in this price range. This nicely gentrified corner of the Theater District makes a great home base, especially for theatergoers. The inn has inspired a loyal following, so reserve early. However, there's no elevator in the four-story building, so over-packers and travelers with limited mobility should book elsewhere.

Hotel Giraffe
Located in the increasingly fashionable Madison Park area, this hotel is a real charmer with a very, calm, intimate feel to it. Guest rooms are stylish, evoking an urban European character, with high ceilings, velveteen upholstered chairs, and original black-and-white photographs from the '20s and '30s. All the rooms are good size with high ceilings, while deluxe rooms and suites feature French doors that lead to small balconies with large windows and remote-controlled blackout shades. Bathrooms are spacious with plenty of marble counter space and glass-paneled doors, and all rooms have very generous marble-topped desks with free high-speed Internet. But what really separates this hotel from so many others are its services: A continental breakfast is included in the rate and served in the hotel's elegant lobby, where coffee, cookies, and tea are available all afternoon, and wine, cheese, and piano music are offered each evening. There is also a lovely rooftop garden -- the perfect place for a glass of wine or morning coffee during warm weather.
