During your Minneapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Minnesota History Center
An impressive array of artifacts is housed in this three-story museum, including photographs, music, and videos, much of it designed for hands-on learning and all of it celebrating Minnesota history. Kids especially enjoy sitting in the re-created basement of a Minnesota farmhouse while a simulated tornado passes overhead. Avoid weekday mornings if you don't like to tour with school groups. Allow 1 1/2 hours.

Mississippi River Visitor Center
Located inside the entrance to the Science Museum of Minnesota , the Mississippi River Visitor Center is operated by the National Park Service and designed to educate visitors about the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area. Park rangers can assist travelers with planning outdoor excursions, including canoe and riverboat trips, hiking, biking, and birding. If you're at all outdoorsy, it's worth a stop.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA)
The MIA's permanent collection of over 100,000 objects of fine and decorative art represents more than 5,000 years of history, including a 2,000-year-old mummy, European masters (Rembrandt, Titian, and Monet, among others), and a comprehensive photography exhibit. The museum's largest and most diverse gallery is its collection of architecture, design, and decorative arts, including a portion of a Prairie School house. If you're short on time, ask for the "Highlights" brochure. Allow 2 hours.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Minneapolis area, including:

Radisson Riverfront St. Paul
Located downtown, overlooking the Mississippi River, the Radisson is topped by the Twin Cities' only revolving restaurant. The hotel's second-floor patio offers a nice river view, and the majority of the comfortable guest rooms offer views as well. Make sure to request an upper or corner room -- the others tend to be noisy.

Minneapolis Marriott City Center
Conveniently located in the heart of downtown, this facility adjoins the three-story City Center shopping mall and is within walking distance of the Target Center and much of the city's nightlife. The hotel caters to the convention crowds and the rooms are standard business hotel issue. The staff is friendly and attentive.

Nicollet Island Inn
Just across from the Mississippi River, this lovely inn was once an 1893 window shade and blind company; it was converted into an inn in the 1970s. The individually decorated rooms are furnished with offbeat originality; all rooms offer VCRs and freshly baked cookies, and some have Jacuzzis. The Nicollet Island Inn Restaurant is highly recommended (as are reservations), featuring contemporary American cuisine and a selection of over 350 wines; it also serves an excellent Sunday brunch ($26 adult, $13 children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under). Ask about weekend B&B packages.
