During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)
MOCA boasts an impressive collection of internationally acclaimed art with a local flavor. It is also known for its forward thinking and ability to discover and highlight new artists. A high-tech screening facility allows for film presentations to complement the exhibitions. You can see works by Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Duane Michaels, and Claes Oldenberg, plus there are special exhibitions by such artists as Yoko Ono, Sigmar Polke, John Baldessari, and Goya. Guided tours are offered in English, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, German, and Italian.

ArtCenter/South Florida
Not exactly a museum in the classic sense of the word, ArtCenter/South Florida is a multichambered space where local artists display their works in all mediums -- from photography and sculpture to video and just about anything else that might exemplify their artistic nature. Admission is free and it's quite fun to mosey through the space viewing the various artists at work in their studios. Of course, all the art is for sale, but there's no pressure to buy. If you call ahead, you can schedule a guided tour of all the studios, which will give you extra insight into the exhibits. Otherwise, just wander and enjoy.

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Sometimes referred to as the "Hearst Castle of the East," this magnificent villa is more Gatsby-esque than anything else you'll find in Miami. It was built in 1916 as a winter retreat for James Deering, co-founder and former vice president of International Harvester. The industrialist was fascinated by 16th-century art and architecture and his ornate mansion, which took 1,000 artisans 5 years to build, became a celebration of that period. If you love antiques, this place is a dream come true, packed with European relics and works of art from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Most of the original furnishings, including dishes and paintings, are still intact. You will see very early versions of a telephone switchboard, central vacuum cleaning system, elevators, and fire sprinklers. A free guided tour of the 34 furnished rooms on the first floor takes about 45 minutes. The second floor, which consists mostly of bedrooms, is open to tour on your own. The spectacularly opulent villa wraps itself around a central courtyard. Outside, lush formal gardens, accented with statuary, balustrades, and decorative urns, front an enormous swath of Biscayne Bay. Definitely take the tour of the rooms, but immediately thereafter, you will want to wander and get lost in the resplendent gardens.

Century Hotel
Although this hip hotel has been around for years, it was ahead of its time when it set up shop in the trendy South of Fifth area of South Beach. Before it became hip to hang here, artists, celebrities, musicians, and a slew of quirky, eccentric Warholian types chose the Century as their home away from home. Practically hidden next to Joia restaurant, the Century is a 1939 Hohauser masterpiece, which has been restored and fully modernized, with rooms featuring funky decor, hardwood floors, and a stellar marble bathroom with glass shower. There's no pool, but the beach is literally across the street, and the hotel is within walking distance of some of the hottest restaurants and bars in town. If you're one of those who is too cool to stay with the mainstream at The Shore Club, staying at the Century is like telling people you live in the coolest apartment building in the hippest neighborhood.

La Flora Hotel
It's hard to keep up with the number of Art Deco, streamlined hotels turned boutique hotels these days, but attention should be paid to La Flora, one of the quieter members of the club. A minimalist 28-room hotel located 1 block from the ocean, La Flora is a very peaceful alternative to the sceney boutique hotels that surround it. Rooms are extremely comfortable and stylish, with damask linens, soothing beige tones, and fabulous black-out curtains that come in handy when you've come in at the crack of dawn. As with many hotels on Collins Avenue, there's no pool, but La Flora's lobby bar, with frequent happy hours, is sporadically swimming with interesting people.

Greenview
Art Deco takes a decidedly Parisian turn in this 1939 Hohauser hotel completely renovated in 1994 by Parisian designer Chahan Minassian. A member of the family-run Rubell Hotels, the Greenview is located just 2 blocks from the ocean on a quiet corner that's close enough to the action, but far enough away that you'll actually feel secluded from the nearby hyperactivity. Recordings of Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich provide background to this elegantly understated hotel, whose jewel-box, living-room-like lobby opens to a serene courtyard. Rooms feature handcrafted furnishings, original Modernist artwork, hardwood floors, and sisal area rugs. Typical at Rubell Hotels is the feel-at-home factor, bolstered by the complimentary baker's breakfast and iced tea and chocolate-chip cookies in the afternoon.
