During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Pearson Air Museum
A very different piece of history is preserved at this small air museum on the far side of Fort Vancouver from Officers' Row. This airfield was established in 1905, making it the oldest operating airfield in the United States. Dozens of vintage aircraft, including several World War I-era biplanes are on display. In August, the museum has a biplane fly-in.

Portland Art Museum
While this relatively small art museum has a respectable collection of European, Asian, and American art, the museum has in recent years been positioning itself as the Northwest stop for touring blockbuster exhibits. Scheduled June 1 to September 22, 2002, is "Splendors of Imperial Japan (Arts of the Meiji Period from the Khalili Collection);" and, from August 17 to December 1, 2002, the museum will be showing "Grandma Moses in the 21st Century." An expansion a couple of years ago added several new galleries and a small sculpture court to the museum. The galleries of Native American art and Northwest art are now the museum's most impressive displays. October through May, on Wednesday nights, the Museum After Hours program presents live music. The adjacent Northwest Film Center is affiliated with the Art Museum and shows an eclectic mix of films.

The Grotto--National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother
Although this forested 62-acre sanctuary is first and foremost a Catholic religious shrine (with a marble replica of Michelangelo's Pietà set in a shallow rock cave at the foot of a cliff), the gardens are quite beautiful. The gardens are at their best in the early summer and during the Christmas season when the grounds are decorated with thousands of lights and a choral festival is held. An elevator ride to the top of the bluff offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range, the Columbia River, and Mount St. Helens. There are also a couple of chapels on the grounds, a gift shop, and a coffee shop. The Grotto is open to visitors of all faiths.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

Days Inn City Center
Although this 1960s vintage hotel lacks much in the way of character or charm, it's one of the few economical choices for anyone wishing to stay in downtown Portland. A renovation a few years back has kept the hotel looking decent, and in the guest rooms, you'll find modern furnishings.

Four Points Hotel Sheraton
Overlooking Waterfront Park and located on the MAX light-rail line, this 1960s vintage hotel looks nondescript from the outside, but the inside has been renovated and given a contemporary look that makes it one of the most stylish hotels in town. You are only steps from the Willamette River (although not actually on the water), and are also close to businesses, fine restaurants, and shopping. Guest rooms are as boldly contemporary in design as the lobby and restaurant, which are sort of downscale Architectural Digest. If this is your style, make this your Portland choice.

Embassy Suites
Located in the restored Multnomah Hotel, which originally opened in 1912, the Embassy Suites has a beautiful large lobby that is a masterpiece of gilded plasterwork, successfully conjuring up the hotel's heyday. The accommodations here are primarily two-room suites, with the exception of a handful of studio suites. In keeping with the historic nature of the hotel, the suites have classically styled furnishings. However, what's much more important is that they give you lots of room to spread out, a rarity in downtown hotels, which tend to have fairly small units. The hotel's Portland Steak and Chophouse is just what its name implies, with a classic dark and woody steakhouse decor and a large bar. There's also a nightly complimentary evening manager's reception.
