During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Natural History Museum
This museum focuses on the flora, fauna, and mineralogy of Southern and Baja California. Kids marvel at the animals they find here, including live snakes, tarantulas, and turtles. As a binational museum, research is done on both sides of the border and most exhibits are bilingual. You can see them all in about half an hour. Call or check the museum's website for a current schedule of special visiting exhibits. There's a 300-seat large-format movie theater, and two films are included in the price of admission.
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala
Established in 1769 above Old Town, this was the first link in a chain of 21 missions founded by Spanish missionary Junípero Serra. In 1774, the mission was moved from Old Town to its present site for agricultural reasons, and to separate Native American converts from the fortress that included the original building. The mission was burned by Native Americans a year after it was built -- Father Serra rebuilt the structure using 5- to 7-foot-thick adobe walls and clay tile roofs, rendering it harder to burn. In the process he inspired a bevy of 20th-century California architects. A few bricks belonging to the original mission can be seen in Presidio Park in Old Town. Mass is said daily in this active Catholic parish. Other missions in San Diego County include Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, Mission San Antonia de Pala near Mount Palomar, and Mission Santa Ysabel near Julian. Known as "the King of Missions," the San Luis Rey is the largest of California's missions and one of its most beautiful.
San Diego Chinese Historical Museum
Located in the former Chinese Mission, where Chinese immigrants learned English and adapted to their new environment, this small museum contains antique Chinese lottery equipment, a series of panels documenting the gold rush, and artifacts unearthed from San Diego's old Chinatown (located south of Market, between Third and Fifth aves.). There's a nice gift shop, and a pleasant garden in back with a bronze statue of Confucius. Allow about half an hour for your visit. Walking tours of the Asian Pacific Historic District start here on the second Saturday of the month; the cost is $2.
La Jolla Cove Suites
Tucked in beside prime oceanview condos across from Ellen Browning Scripps Park, this family-run 1950s-era catbird seat actually sits closer to the ocean than its pricey uphill neighbor La Valencia. The to-die-for ocean view is completely unobstructed, and La Jolla Cove -- one of California's prettiest swimming spots -- is steps away from the hotel. The six-story property is peaceful at night, but Village dining and shopping are only a short walk away. You'll pay according to the quality of your view; about 80% of guest quarters gaze upon the ocean. On the plus side, most rooms are wonderfully spacious, each featuring a fully equipped kitchen, plus private balcony or patio. On the minus side, their functional but almost institutional furnishings have drawn complaints from Frommer's readers. An oceanview rooftop deck offers lounge chairs and cafe tables; breakfast is served up here each morning, indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.
The Grande Colonial
Possessed of an old-world European flair that's more London or Georgetown than seaside La Jolla, the Grande Colonial earned accolades for the complete restoration in 2001 of its polished mahogany paneling, brass fittings, and genteel library and lounge. During the original heyday of the La Jolla Playhouse, it was the temporary home for everyone from Groucho Marx to Jane Wyatt. Today, a large spray of fresh flowers is the focal point in the lounge, where guests gather in front of the fireplace for drinks -- often before enjoying dinner at the hotel's Nine-Ten restaurant. Guest rooms are quiet and elegantly appointed, with beautiful draperies and traditional furnishings. The hotel is 1 block from the ocean, but many rooms have sea views. The guest rooms have thoughtful amenities; terry robes are available on request. Relics from the early days include oversize closets and meticulously tiled bathrooms. Numerous historic photos on the walls illustrate the hotel's fascinating story, which started as a full-service apartment hotel in 1913. Among La Jolla's mini-horde of deluxe properties, the Grande Colonial is often overlooked. In fact, the centrally located hotel is a sleeper that provides comparatively good value.
Harbor Vacations Club
Here's an unusual opportunity to sleep on the water in your own power yacht, sailboat, or "floating villa" (also known as a houseboat). You fall asleep to the gentle lapping of waves and awaken to the call of seagulls. The vessels are docked in a recreational marina on Harbor Island, near the airport and close to downtown. Just when I was about to question the operation's manager about how limited the clientele might be, in walked a Dallas businessman (visiting San Diego for a convention) who extolled without solicitation the pleasure of his unique lodging -- "I'll be staying here again," he said. The four 32- to 55-foot floating villas average 650 square feet, sleep four or five persons, and feel like modern condos, with their own laundry facilities, comfortable furnishings, multiple TVs and VCR, direct-dial phones, a stereo, and many other comforts, including a balcony and sun deck. Four well-kept power yachts have two staterooms, two heads, a full galley, and stereo system. Serious sailors may prefer to sleep on one of three sailboats. They range in length from 22 feet to 30 feet and are best suited for one couple. If showering on board any of the boats is too cramped for you, guests have the use of full restrooms at the marina headquarters, as well as the swimming pool there. There are five restaurants within walking distance. For an additional charge you can even charter a private cruise aboard your "room" ($125-$495 for a 3- to 4-hr. cruise, plus $45/hr. for a skipper). Formerly known as San Diego Yacht and Breakfast, the company is now part of time-share operation Shell Vacations Club. Note: Not ideal for guests with limited mobility.
