During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Oregon Zoo
Perhaps best known for its elephants, the Oregon Zoo has the largest breeding herd of elephants in captivity. However, in recent years, the zoo has been continually adding new exhibits and has been branching out beyond the world of pachyderms. The Africa exhibit, which includes a very lifelike rain forest and a savanna populated by zebras, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and other animals, is one of the most true-to-life habitats you'll ever see at a zoo. Equally impressive is the Alaskan tundra exhibit, with grizzly bears, wolves, and musk oxen. The Cascade Crest exhibit includes mountain goat habitat, and in the Steller Cove exhibit, you can watch the antics of Steller sea lions and sea otters. Also, don't miss the bat house. At press time, there were plans to open a new Amazon Flooded Forest exhibit in late 2001.In the summer, there are outdoor concerts in the zoo's amphitheater; admission prices vary.

American Advertising Museum
Like it or not, advertising is here to stay. In this small museum, you'll learn about its history, from the 1700s to the present, through displays on historic advertisements, celebrities, and jingles. Tapes of old TV commercials provide a popular trip down memory lane. Lots of 20th-century advertising icons are on display, and the most influential ads of the past century are chronicled in detail. Definitely a fun and unusual little museum.

Portland Saturday Market
The Portland Saturday Market (actually held on both Sat-Sun) is arguably the city's single most important and best-loved event. For years the Northwest has attracted artists and craftspeople, and every Saturday and Sunday nearly 300 of them can be found selling their creations here. In addition to the dozens of crafts stalls, you'll find ethnic and unusual foods and lots of free entertainment. This is one of the best places in Portland to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts. The atmosphere is always cheerful and the crowds colorful. Located at the heart of the Skidmore District, Portland Saturday Market makes an excellent starting or finishing point for a walk around Portland's downtown historic neighborhood. Don't miss this unique market. On Sunday, on-street parking is free.

Sullivan's Gulch B&B
Set on a quiet, tree-shaded street just a couple of blocks off busy Northeast Broadway, this inn is a 1907 home filled with an eclectic mix of Mission-style furniture, Asian artifacts, and contemporary art. Our favorite room here is the Northwest Room, which is decorated with Northwest Coast Native American masks and has an old Hudson's Bay Company blanket on the bed. There's also a room that draws on Montana and Western art for its decor. A pretty little deck out back is a pleasant place to hang out in summer. The inn is popular with gay and lesbian travelers, and with the MAX stop just a few blocks away it's convenient to get downtown.

Greenwood Inn
The Greenwood Inn is a resortlike, low-rise hotel with beautifully landscaped grounds that reflect the garden style of the Pacific Northwest. This is Beaverton's best hotel and is located only 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Portland. A good restaurant and an atmospheric lounge make this an all-around good choice. If you're in the area to do business in the "Silicon Forest," the Greenwood is a good location. Guest rooms are large and comfortable and most are designed with business travelers in mind, and in the bathrooms, you'll find plenty of counter space for toiletries. Executive rooms, which cost a little extra, are exceptional, with original artwork on the walls, three phones, and a well-lighted desk/work area.

The Mark Spencer Hotel
If you're planning an extended stay in Portland and need to be right downtown, this is the place for you. Although the hotel is not in the best neighborhood (there are lots of nightclubs and bars in the vicinity), it's just around the corner from both Powell's City of Books and Jake's Famous Crawfish, one of Portland's oldest and best seafood restaurants. The rooms and suites here have rather dated decor but all have kitchenettes, which is the main draw here for people planning on spending a week or more in town. The hotel offers afternoon tea, and there's also a great rooftop garden deck. The Mark Spencer is a favorite with the casts of touring Broadway shows, and is also a good choice for any gay travelers interested in checking out the nearby bars.
