During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
The Scott Rakow Youth Center
This center is a hidden treasure on Miami Beach. The two-story facility boasts an ice-skating rink, bowling alleys, a basketball court, gymnasium equipment, and full-time supervision for kids in the fourth grade and up. Call for a complete schedule of organized events. The only drag is that it's not open to adults (except on Sun, family day).
GameWorks
At Steven Spielberg's SEGA GameWorks in the Shops at Sunset Place, you'll see people fighting off dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, racing in the Indy 500, swooshing down a snowy ski trail, throwing darts, and shooting pool in this multilevel playground. The young and the young at heart will find a good combination of vintage arcade games, high-tech videos, virtual-reality arenas, pool tables, food, and cocktails in this playground occupying more than 33,000 square feet. Bring lots -- and we mean lots -- of change.
Eco-Adventure Tours
For the eco-conscious traveler, the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department offers guided nature, adventure, and historic tours involving biking, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, and bird-watching all over the city. Contact them for more information.
Bay Harbor Inn and Suites
This thoroughly renovated inn is just moments from the beach, fine restaurants, and the Bal Harbour Shops. The inn comes in two parts: The more modern section overlooks a swampy river and a heated outdoor pool. On the other side of the street, "townside," is the cozier, antiques-filled portion, where glass-covered bookshelves hold good beach reading. The rooms have a hodgepodge of wood furnishings (mostly Victorian replicas), while suites boast an extra half-bathroom. You can often smell the aroma of cooking from the restaurant below, which is operated by students at Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute.
The Kent
For a funky boutique hotel in the heart of South Beach, The Kent is quite a deal. All rooms feature blond wood floors and ultra modern steel furnishings and accessories, which surprisingly aren't cold, but rather inviting and whimsical. The staff is eager to please and the clientele comes largely from the fashion industry. Frequent photo shoots are coordinated in the lobby and conference room, where full office services are available. The Barbara Hulanicki decor is high on the kitsch factor, heavy on multicolored Lucite with toys and other assorted articles of whimsy, and even if you can't afford to stay in it, the very James Bond-esque Lucite Suite is a must-see. There's no pool or sun deck, but you're only 1 block from the beach here.
Conrad Miami
Although you won't find ubiquitous Hilton heiresses Paris and Nicky at this business oriented hotel (they hang out on South Beach), you will find luxury-lovers who have no interest in minimalism and J-Lo spottings and, instead, prefer to bask in the Hilton brand of luxury. The Conrad Miami joins its London, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Brussels, and New York siblings in the form of this 203-room, 36-floor skyscraper located in the heart of Miami's financial district, which opened in January 2004. While at first you may feel as if you're in an office building, once you walk over the bridge across a sparkling pool, visions of cramped cubicles and bad lighting will immediately disappear. The lobby is located on the 26th floor, which is illuminated by a magnificent atrium that shares the attention with a restaurant, lounge, and bar and splits the difference between the 203-guest rooms and the 116 fully serviced luxury apartments. All rooms feature hyper-high-tech amenities such as flatscreen TVs, and, best of all, INNCOM, a bedside remote that controls all lights, thermostat, and do not disturb signs in the room. Because this is a condo-hotel, expect nothing but the best in amenities, including a superbly-equipped fitness center, two tennis courts, and a remarkable swimming pool. Also set to open is an upscale retail center, with stores in which only the likes of the Hilton sisters can afford to shop.
