During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Holocaust Memorial
This heart-wrenching memorial is hard to miss and would be a shame to overlook. The powerful centerpiece, Kenneth Triester's Sculpture of Love & Anguish, depicts victims of the concentration camps crawling up a giant, yearning hand, stretching up to the sky, marked with an Auschwitz number tattoo. Along the reflecting pool is the story of the Holocaust, told in cut marble slabs. Inside the center of the memorial is a tableau that is one of the most solemn and moving tributes to the millions of Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust I've seen. You can walk through an open hallway lined with photographs and the names of concentration camps and their victims. From the street, you'll see the outstretched arm, but do stop and tour the sculpture at ground level.

GameWorks
At Steven Spielberg's SEGA GameWorks in the Shops at Sunset Place, you'll see people fighting off dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, racing in the Indy 500, swooshing down a snowy ski trail, throwing darts, and shooting pool in this multilevel playground. The young and the young at heart will find a good combination of vintage arcade games, high-tech videos, virtual-reality arenas, pool tables, food, and cocktails in this playground occupying more than 33,000 square feet. Bring lots -- and we mean lots -- of change.

Lowe Art Museum
Located on the University of Miami campus, the Lowe Art Museum has a dazzling collection of 8,000 works that include American paintings, Latin American art, Navajo and Pueblo Indian textiles, and Renaissance and baroque art. Traveling exhibits such as Rolling Stone magazine's photo collection also stop here. For the most part, the Lowe is known for its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and, as compared to the more modern MOCA, Bass, and Miami Art Museum, features mostly European and international art hailing back to ancient times.

Alexander All-Suite Luxury Hotel
This luxury hotel is a place Robin Leach would give his "champagne wishes and caviar dreams" approval rating. Just a few miles from either happening South Beach or ritzy Bal Harbour, the Alexander is pricey, but worth it for the size of the suites and the doting attention. The Alexander features spacious one- and two-bedroom miniapartments with private balconies overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Miami's Intracoastal Waterway. Each contains a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, two bathrooms (one with just a shower and the other with a shower/tub combo), and a balcony. The rooms are elegant without being pretentious and have every convenience you could want. The hotel itself is well decorated, with sculptures, paintings, antiques, and tapestries, most of which were garnered from the Cornelius Vanderbilt mansion. An ongoing renovation to upgrade the suites promises to keep the Alexander on the forefront of modern luxury. Two oceanfront pools are surrounded by lush vegetation; one of these "lagoons" is fed by a cascading waterfall. Shula's Steak House, owned by former Dolphins football coach Don Shula, is open for lunch and dinner daily, and is a favorite of both meat eaters and Dolphins fans.Facilities: 2 restaurants; 2 bars; 2 large outdoor pools; small fitness center; Jacuzzis, sauna; watersports equipment; concierge; car rental through concierge; business center and secretarial services; salon; limited room service; in-room massage; laundry service; dry cleaning.

Essex House Hotel and Suites
The Essex House Hotel was created by Deco pioneer Henry Hohauser in 1938 and has received numerous awards for its authentic restoration. The hotel's whimsically created ship-like architecture rises from the shore with decks that are designed to take in succulent ocean breezes. The sleek Bauhaus interiors add to the distinct charm of the place. All suites feature solid-oak furnishings and have a fridge, wet bar, and Jacuzzi. Although the hotel is right on the pulse of South Beach's constant activity, the new double-glazed, sound-absorbing windows provide an acoustical barrier to the street noise. A spa pool graces the south patio and gardens. In an area where the infamous Al Capone used to play cards, there is now an intimate dining area where complimentary breakfast is served and evening cocktails can be enjoyed. Unlike most hotels in the area, the Essex House is not a boutique hotel, so if you're looking for a scene, go elsewhere.

The Hotel
Kitschy fashion designer Todd Oldham whimsically restored this 1939 gem (formerly the Tiffany Hotel) as he would have a vintage piece of couture. He laced it with lush, cool colors, hand-cut mirrors, and glass mosaics from his ready-to-wear factory, then added artisan detailing, terrazzo floors, and porthole windows. The small, soundproof rooms are very comfortable and incredibly stylish, though the bathrooms are a bit cramped. Nevertheless, the showers are irresistible, with fantastic rain-head showerheads. There's no need to pay more for an oceanfront view here -- go up to the rooftop, where the pool is located, and you'll see an amazing view of the Atlantic. The hotel's restaurant, Wish, is one of South Beach's best.
