During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Larz Anderson Auto Museum
The Larz Anderson Auto Museum occupies an 1888 carriage house modeled after a French château. Beginning in 1899, Larz and Isabel Anderson acquired the cars that form the core of the collection, now the country's oldest private assemblage of antique autos. The cars boast what was then the latest equipment, from a two-cylinder engine (in a 1901 Winton race car) to a full lavatory (in a 1906 CGV). Along with the vehicles, auto-related memorabilia from the collection and from other sources are on display. The museum (formerly the Museum of Transportation) has a good gift shop and frequently schedules special events such as concerts, lectures, and family programs. On most warm-weather Sundays, outdoor lawn events include displays of vehicles such as Corvettes, Cadillacs, Triumphs, European motorcycles, or Italian imports. Call to find out what's being featured during your visit.

Old Granary Burying Ground
This cemetery, established in 1660, was once part of Boston Common. You'll see the graves of patriots Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and James Otis; merchant Peter Faneuil (spelled "Funal"); and Benjamin Franklin's parents. Also buried here are the victims of the Boston Massacre (discussed below) and the wife of Isaac Vergoose, who is believed to be "Mother Goose" of nursery rhyme fame. Note that gravestone rubbing, however tempting, is illegal in Boston's historic cemeteries. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn left as you leave the cemetery and continue 1 1/2 blocks on Tremont Street.

The Institute of Contemporary Art
Across from the Hynes Convention Center, the ICA mounts rotating exhibits of 20th- and 21st-century art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video and performance art. Its shows are among the most imaginative around, focusing on everything from baseball to Mexico. The institute also offers films, lectures, musical performances, poetry readings, and educational programs for children and adults. The 1886 building, originally a police station, is a showpiece in its own right. The ICA's profile is on the rise. It's in the process of building a new museum at Fan Pier, on the South Boston waterfront near the federal courthouse. A $37 million project designed by the pioneering New York firm Diller + Scofidio, the new building is scheduled to open in 2006. Check this space for details and updates in future editions.

Four Seasons Hotel
Many hotels offer exquisite service, a beautiful location, elegant guest rooms and public areas, a terrific health club, and wonderful restaurants. But no other hotel in Boston -- indeed, in New England -- combines every element of a luxury hotel as seamlessly as the Four Seasons. If I were traveling with someone else's credit cards, I'd head straight here.Overlooking the beautiful Public Garden, this 16-story brick-and-glass building (the hotel occupies eight floors) incorporates the traditional and the contemporary. The spacious accommodations feel more like stylish apartments than hotel rooms, with lots of plush fabrics (including dramatic window coverings), elaborate moldings, and marble bathrooms. The best units overlook the Public Garden; city views from the back of the hotel aren't as desirable but can be engaging, especially from the higher floors. The staff caters to children with bedtime snacks and toys, and you can ask at the concierge desk for duck food to take to the Public Garden. Small pets even enjoy a special menu and amenities. Larger accommodations range from executive suites with parlor areas to luxurious deluxe suites with sweeping views.Facilities: Restaurant; bar; heated 51-ft. pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the Public Garden; health club and spa; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; limo to downtown; business center; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.

Radisson Hotel Boston
The neighborhood here isn't the most attractive, due to heavy construction, but this Radisson is a pleasant surprise, popular with business travelers, tour groups, and vacationers alike. The hotel is in the Theater District, convenient to both the Back Bay and downtown. This would be a prime property anywhere: The guest rooms are among the largest in the city, and each has a private balcony (with great views from the higher floors), a sitting area, and a king or two queen beds. The hotel underwent a complete renovation in 1997 and an upgrade in 2003. The best units are the executive-level rooms on the top five floors of the 24-story building. The Stuart Street Playhouse (tel. 617/426-4499), a small theater in the hotel, often stages one-person shows. The hotel also has an indoor golf school and practice facility (tel. 617/457-2699).

The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel
The "grande dame of Boston" is a truly majestic hotel, an old-fashioned lodging that recalls the days when an out-of-town trip (by train, of course) was an event, not an ordeal. Built in 1912, the six-story Renaissance-revival building faces Copley Square, with Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library on either side. Already known for superb service, the Copley Plaza has enjoyed a rebirth since becoming a Fairmont property in 1996. In 2004, a $29 million renovation and redecoration of the spacious guest rooms was completed. The custom-made furnishings, which include oversize desks and pillow-top mattresses, reflect the elegance of the opulent public spaces. Rooms that face the lovely square or Clarendon Street afford better views than those that overlook busy Dartmouth Street.Facilities: 2 restaurants (steakhouse, New England); bar; lounge; exercise room; concierge; courtesy car; business center; 24-hr. room service; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning; concierge-level rooms. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
