Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
Nowhere do rhododendrons do better than in the cool, rainy Northwest, and nowhere in Portland is there a more impressive planting of rhodies than at Crystal Springs. Eight months out of the year this is a tranquil garden, with a waterfall, a lake, and ducks to feed. But when the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom from March to June, it becomes a spectacular mass of blazing color. The Rhododendron Show and Plant Sale is held here on Mother's Day weekend.
End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
With its three Paul Bunyan-size wagons parked in the middle of Abernethy Green (the official end of the Oregon Trail), this interpretive center is impossible to miss. Inside the first of the giant wagons, you'll find an exhibit hall, hands-on area, and gift shop. After looking around this first wagon, you'll then be led through the next one by costumed interpreters who explain the difficulties of provisioning for the overland trek. The third wagon houses a multimedia presentation based on three Oregon Trail diaries.
Museum of the Oregon Territory
This small museum houses collections of historic memorabilia and old photos from this area. There's the obligatory covered wagon, as well as a display of Native American petroglyphs. Your admission ticket to this museum will also get you into the Stevens Crawford House, 603 Sixth St., a foursquare-style home that is furnished with late-19th-century antiques and looks as if the family just stepped out.
Mallory Hotel
The Mallory, which is right on the west-side Max line and thus convenient for exploring the city by light rail, has long been a favorite of Portland visitors who want the convenience of staying downtown but aren't on a bottomless expense account. This is an older hotel, and the lobby, with its ornate gilt plasterwork trim and crystal chandeliers, has a certain classic (and faded) grandeur. Time seems to have stood still here (there's a lounge straight out of the 1950s).The standard rooms are not as luxurious as the lobby might suggest and are smaller than comparable rooms at the Imperial or Days Inn, but are comfortable and clean. With rates this low, you might even want to go for one of the king-size suites, which are as big as they come, with walk-in closets, refrigerators, and sofa beds. Free local calls are a nice perk.The dining room at the Mallory continues the grand design of the lobby. Heavy drapes hang from the windows, and faux-marble pillars lend just the right air of imperial grandeur.
Doubletree Hotel Portland Columbia River
Attractive landscaping and an interesting low-rise design that's slightly reminiscent of a Northwest Coast Indian longhouse give this convention hotel a very resortlike feel and have kept it popular for many years. Although rush-hour traffic problems can make this a bad choice if you're here to explore Portland, it's a good location if you plan to visit Mount St. Helens. You're also within walking distance of a large shopping mall. Guest rooms are large, though rather nondescript, but many of them have views of the Columbia River. Be sure to ask for one of these.
Silver Cloud Inn Portland Airport
Conveniently located right outside the airport, this hotel has one of the best backyards of any hotel in the Portland area. A lake, lawns, and trees all add up to a tranquil setting despite the proximity of both the airport and a busy nearby road. Rooms are designed primarily for business travelers, but even if you aren't here on an expense account, the rooms are a good value, especially those with whirlpool tubs (and you even get free local calls). Some suites have gas fireplaces. Best of all, with the exception of two suites, every room has a view of the lake. An indoor pool is another big plus here. To find this hotel, take the complimentary airport shuttle or head straight out of the airport, drive under the I-205 overpass, and watch for the hotel sign ahead on the left.
