During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Six Flags Elitch Gardens Theme Park
A Denver tradition established in 1889, this amusement park moved to its present downtown site in 1995. The 45-plus rides include Twister II, an unbelievable 10-story roller coaster with a 90-foot drop and dark tunnel; the Flying Coaster, a one-of-a-kind "hang gliding" experience where passengers lie facedown; the Halfpipe, a snowboarding-themed thrill ride that involves 16 passengers on a 39-foot board; the 220-foot, free-fall Tower of Doom; and a fully restored 1925 carousel with 67 hand-carved horses and chariots. Patrons of all ages can enjoy the Island Kingdom Water Park while the little ones have fun on pint-sized rides in the Looney Tunes MovieTown. There are also musical revues and stunt shows, games and arcades, food, shopping, and beautiful flower gardens. Allow 3 hours.
Museo de las Americas
The only museum in the Rocky Mountains focusing exclusively on the art, culture, and history of Latinos, the Museo is worth a stop, as is a stroll through the surrounding gallery-laden neighborhood. The exhibits here change regularly, and a semi-permanent exhibit tells the story of pre-Colombian Latin America, with a replica of an ornate sunstone and exhibits on Tenochtitlan, the Aztec metropolis (on the site of present-day Mexico City) destroyed by invading Spaniards in the 16th century. In 2005, a major exhibit on folk art is being displayed. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
Lakeside Amusement Park
Among the largest amusement parks in the Rocky Mountains, Lakeside has about 40 rides, including a Cyclone roller coaster, a midway with carnival and arcade games, and a rare steam-powered miniature train that circles the lake. There are also food stands and picnic facilities, plus a separate Kiddie's Playland with 15 rides. Allow 3 hours.
Burnsley All Suite Hotel
This small, elegant hotel offers suites with private balconies and separate living, bedroom, dining, and fully stocked kitchen areas. The units are handsomely furnished, featuring marble entrance floors and antiques. The suites are expansive (averaging 700 sq. ft.) and popular with travelers who prefer to be a bit away from the hubbub of downtown. The hotel sits on a relatively quiet one-way street a few blocks southeast of the State Capitol. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays, and breakfast and dinner on weekends. The menu features fresh salmon, tenderloin, Colorado game plate, and vegetarian dishes. The lounge is a local favorite, a swank space with live jazz on Thursdays and Fridays. The hotel is conveniently situated near the Cherry Creek shopping areas and is only 5 blocks from downtown.
Delux R.V. Park
The only RV campground actually in Denver city limits, this campground has shaded sites, hot showers, laundry, a dumpsite, and full hookups. It's convenient to buses (no. 31 RTD), shopping, and recreational facilities. Open year-round, the campground is 5 blocks north of I-70 exit 272, and 2 blocks south of I-76 exit 3, on the east side of Federal Boulevard.
The Warwick
One of four Warwicks in the United States (the others are in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle), this handsome midsize choice boasts an exterior and rooms reminiscent of hotels in Paris, where the corporate office is located. In contrast, the earth-tone lobby stylishly reflects the region, with classic European design, contemporary Western furnishings, and slate and red-stone stonework. The hotel completed a $20 million renovation in 2000 that updated the property and cemented its status as one of the city's finest.Every room features a full private balcony with a great city view, and most are equipped with a fridge and wet bar. Each has one king- or two queen-size beds, contemporary mahogany furniture, floral prints on the walls, cable TV (with pay-per-view movies), and two incoming phone lines -- as well as wireless high-speed Internet access. There's also a phone in each bathroom. The standard rooms are very spacious, averaging 750 square feet each, and the 42 suites, which range from two-room parlor suites to grand luxury suites, are even more so.
