During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Carnton Plantation
Built in 1826 by Randal McGavock, a former mayor of Nashville, Carnton Plantation is a beautiful neoclassical antebellum mansion with a Greek Revival portico. During the Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, this plantation home served as a Confederate hospital, and today you can still see the blood stains on floors throughout the house. The interior of the stately old home is almost completely restored and houses many McGavock family pieces and other period furnishings. Two years after the battle, the McGavock family donated 2 acres of land to be used as a cemetery for Confederate soldiers who had died during the Battle of Franklin. There are almost 1,500 graves in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, which makes this the largest private Confederate cemetery in the country.

Belmont Mansion
Built in the 1850s by Adelicia Acklen, then one of the wealthiest women in the country, this Italianate villa is the city's most elegant historic home open to the public, and its grand salon is one of the most elaborately decorated rooms in any antebellum home in Tennessee. Belmont Mansion was originally built as a summer home, yet no expense was spared in its construction. On your tour of the mansion, you'll see rooms filled with period antiques, artwork, and marble statues. This museum also has an excellent gift shop full of reproduction period pieces. Allow at least 90 minutes to tour the mansion.Shutterbugs, take note: Unlike many museums and historic mansions, photography is permitted inside the Belmont Mansion. So stock up on film or digital-camera cartridges, and click away!

Travellers Rest Historic House Museum
Built in 1799, Travellers Rest, as its name implies, once offered gracious Southern hospitality to travelers passing through a land that had only recently been settled. Judge John Overton (who, along with Andrew Jackson and Gen. James Winchester, founded the city of Memphis) built Travellers Rest. Overton also served as a political advisor to Jackson when he ran for president. Among the period furnishings you'll see in this restored Federal-style farmhouse is the state's largest public collection of pre-1840 Tennessee-made furniture. Allow an hour to tour the museum, and more if you want to wander the grounds and outbuildings.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Nashville area, including:

Holiday Inn Express
Looks can be deceiving. Catty-cornered from the Union Station Hotel, this rather nondescript property (formerly known as the Ramada Inn Conference Center) offers a budget-pleasing choice for business travelers who want to stay downtown. Value-added perks include free wi/fi (wireless Internet connection) in all public areas, and free continental breakfast. The location is convenient-it's only about 5 blocks straight down Broadway to The District. Rooms are recently renovated and reasonably spacious, and if you ask for an upper-floor room on the west side of the short hall, you'll get a view of the impressive Union Station.

Holiday Inn Select Vanderbilt
With the Vanderbilt University football stadium right outside this 12-story hotel's back door, it isn't surprising that this is a favorite with Vanderbilt alumni and football fans. However, if you stay here, you're also right across the street from Centennial Park and the Parthenon. Couples and business travelers will do well to ask for a king room. These are considerably more comfortable than rooms with two beds in them, and have work desks. If you ask for a room on the park side of the hotel, you may be able to see the Parthenon from your room. All the rooms here have small private balconies.

Wyndham Garden Hotel-Nashville Airport
Recently renovated, this hotel has a refreshingly peaceful ambience. Just inside the front door, you'll find a seating area with a living-room feel beckoning you to sit down and relax a while. Behind this space is a lounge done up to look like a library. The guest rooms all feature classic cherrywood furniture. Spacious bathrooms include plenty of counter space.
