Pioneer Memorial Museum
Operated by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, this museum, housed in a Grecian-style building, contains an immense collection of pioneer portraits and memorabilia. The main floor contains paintings, photos, and the personal effects of church leaders Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball. The collection also includes a manuscript room, household displays, and exhibits on spinning, weaving, railroading, mining, and guns. The restored 1902 steam fire engine is our favorite exhibit. All four stories are packed with relics of Utah's history. You can walk through on your own or with the aid of a guide sheet; tours are also available. A 12-minute film is shown throughout the day. Allow 1 hour.

Gallivan Center
Some call this Salt Lake City's outdoor living room. You'll find intimate spaces, performances, food, all kinds of characters and activities, and good vantage points for watching the goings-on. Wander through the large art exhibit and the gigantic outdoor chessboard with waist-high pieces, and enjoy the pond, amphitheater, outdoor ice skating rink (call for hours and rates), and aviary. Allow 30 minutes.

Salt Lake Art Center
Changing exhibits feature contemporary works by local, regional, and national artists. There are generally several simultaneous exhibitions in a variety of media, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and ceramics. Allow at least 1 hour, and check the schedule for lectures, poetry readings, concerts, and workshops.

Little America Hotel
Little America is among Salt Lake City's finest hotels, offering a wide variety of rooms, all individually decorated. Among our top choices for those who appreciate the ambiance of a historic hotel, the Peery is one of the few truly historic hotels in Salt Lake City. Completed in 1910, it has been fully renovated and restored to its former understated European elegance, offering comfortable, tastefully decorated accommodations. The lobby is delightful, with old-style pigeonholes for letters and a grand staircase to the upper floors. Each unique, handsomely appointed room contains period furnishings, pedestal sinks with antique brass fixtures, a queen or king bed, and desk. Some units have refrigerators, and several suites have whirlpool tubs. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.

The Armstrong Mansion Bed & Breakfast
This stately red-brick mansion exudes an atmosphere of splendor and luxury. The B&B is an opulent Queen Anne-style Victorian home decorated with antiques and reproductions. It features such architectural delights as stained-glass windows and an intricately carved oak staircase. The four-story mansion, built in 1893 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was renovated in 1994 and now has an elevator. The stencils on the walls are reproductions of the mansion's original decorative patterns, discovered during renovation. A variety of rooms are available; most have queen-size beds though a few have kings. Most units have whirlpool tubs. The full all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet -- served between 7:30 and 10am -- consists of a hot dish, breads, and a variety of fruits.
