Pearson Air Museum
A very different piece of history is preserved at this small air museum on the far side of Fort Vancouver from Officers' Row. This airfield was established in 1905, making it the oldest operating airfield in the United States. Dozens of vintage aircraft, including several World War I-era biplanes are on display. In August, the museum has a biplane fly-in.

International Rose Test Garden
Covering 4 1/2 acres of hillside in the West Hills above downtown Portland, these are among the largest and oldest rose test gardens in the United States and are the only city-maintained test gardens to bestow awards on each year's best roses. The gardens were established in 1917 by the American Rose Society and are used as a testing ground for new varieties of roses. Though you will likely see some familiar roses in the Gold Medal Garden, most of the 400 varieties on display here are new hybrids being tested before marketing. Among the roses in bloom from late spring to early winter, you'll find a separate garden of miniature roses. There's also a Shakespeare Garden that includes flowers mentioned in the Bard's works. After seeing these acres of roses, you'll understand why Portland is known as the City of Roses and why the Rose Festival in June is the city's biggest annual celebration. The small Rose Garden Store (tel. 503/227-7033), is packed with rose-inspired products.

The Grotto--National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother
Although this forested 62-acre sanctuary is first and foremost a Catholic religious shrine (with a marble replica of Michelangelo's Pietà set in a shallow rock cave at the foot of a cliff), the gardens are quite beautiful. The gardens are at their best in the early summer and during the Christmas season when the grounds are decorated with thousands of lights and a choral festival is held. An elevator ride to the top of the bluff offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range, the Columbia River, and Mount St. Helens. There are also a couple of chapels on the grounds, a gift shop, and a coffee shop. The Grotto is open to visitors of all faiths.

Located across the street from the Columbia River, this modern suburban all-suite hotel is a great choice for families. The hotel charges surprisingly reasonable rates for large apartment-like accommodations that include full kitchens. Rates also include not only a large breakfast but afternoon snacks as well (Mon-Thurs). These snacks are substantial enough to pass for dinner if you aren't too hungry. The hotel is right across the street from both a beach-theme restaurant and a brewpub. Across the street, you'll also find a paved riverside path that's great for walking or jogging. The only drawback is that it's a 15- to 20-minute drive to downtown Portland.

Columbia Gorge Hotel
Located just west of the town of Hood River off I-84 and opened shortly after the Columbia River Scenic Highway was completed in 1915, this little oasis of luxury offers the same genteel atmosphere that was once enjoyed by the likes of Rudolph Valentino and Clark Gable. With its yellow-stucco walls and red-tile roofs, this hotel would be right at home in Beverly Hills, and the hotel gardens could hold their own in Victoria, British Columbia. Despite the attractive furnishings and gardens, it is almost impossible to notice anything but the view from the windows. The hotel is perched more than 200 feet above the river on a steep cliff.Guest rooms are all a little different, with a mixture of antique and classic furnishings. There are canopy beds, brass beds, and even some hand-carved wooden beds. Unfortunately, many of the rooms are rather cramped, as are the bathrooms, most of which have older fixtures. However, some rooms have soaking tubs and fireplaces.

The Lion and the Rose
This imposing Queen Anne-style Victorian inn is located in the Irvington District; it's 1 block off Northeast Broadway and within walking distance of several good restaurants, which makes it an appropriate choice if you want to keep your driving to a minimum. Within 4 blocks are not only restaurants and cafes, but also a number of eclectic boutiques and a huge shopping mall. Yet, the Lion and Rose itself is in a fairly quiet residential neighborhood. Even if this inn were not so splendidly located, it would still be a gem. Guest rooms each have a distinctively different decor. In the Lavonna room, there are bright colors and a turret sitting area, while in the deep green Starina room you'll find an imposing Edwardian bed and armoire. Both the Garden room and the Lavonna Room's shared bathroom have claw-foot tubs, while some rooms have rather cramped, though attractive, bathrooms. If you have problems climbing stairs, ask for the ground floor's Rose room, which has a whirlpool tub. Breakfasts are sumptuous affairs that are meant to be lingered over.
