During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA)
The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) was created as a resource for exploring and supporting experimental art and new music in Portland. Here, at the Institute's gallery facility, PICA presents visual art exhibitions focusing on contemporary trends in the regional, national, and international art scene. These exhibitions are always innovative and thought-provoking. At various venues around the city, PICA hosts performances by both well-known and less-established performance artists and musicians.

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
Nowhere do rhododendrons do better than in the cool, rainy Northwest, and nowhere in Portland is there a more impressive planting of rhodies than at Crystal Springs. Eight months out of the year this is a tranquil garden, with a waterfall, a lake, and ducks to feed. But when the rhododendrons and azaleas bloom from March to June, it becomes a spectacular mass of blazing color. The Rhododendron Show and Plant Sale is held here on Mother's Day weekend.

24-Hour Church of Elvis/Where's the Art?
This is Portland's longtime temple of kitsch, the city's most bizarre attraction. Coin-operated art, a video psychic, cheap (though not legal) weddings, and other absurd assemblages, interactive displays, and kitschy contraptions (such as the Vend-O-Matic Mystery Machine with whirling dolls' heads) cram this second-floor oddity. As celebrity-spokes-model/minister S. G. Pierce says, "the tour is the art form." If you pass the customer test, you can even buy a Church of Elvis T-shirt. Great fun if you're a fan of Elvis, tabloids, or the unusual; and if you've seen Elvis anytime in the past decade, a visit is absolutely mandatory.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

Four Points Hotel Sheraton
Overlooking Waterfront Park and located on the MAX light-rail line, this 1960s vintage hotel looks nondescript from the outside, but the inside has been renovated and given a contemporary look that makes it one of the most stylish hotels in town. You are only steps from the Willamette River (although not actually on the water), and are also close to businesses, fine restaurants, and shopping. Guest rooms are as boldly contemporary in design as the lobby and restaurant, which are sort of downscale Architectural Digest. If this is your style, make this your Portland choice.

Silver Cloud Inn Portland Downtown
This hotel is located on the edge of Portland's trendy Nob Hill neighborhood, and though it faces the beginning of the city's industrial area, it is still a very attractive and comfortable place (ask for a room away from Vaughn Street). Reasonable rates are the main draw here, but the rooms are also well designed and filled with plenty of conveniences, like free local calls. Although the minisuites have wet bars, microwave ovens, and separate seating areas, the king rooms with whirlpool tubs, which happen to be the most expensive rooms, are our favorites. However, the best thing about the hotel is its location within a 5-minute drive (or 15-min. walk) of half a dozen of the city's best restaurants. To find the hotel, take I-405 to Ore. 30 west and get off at the Vaughn Street exit.

Portland Marriott Downtown
Located just across Waterfront Park and Naito Parkway from the Willamette River, the high-rise Portland Marriott offers great views of Mount Hood from its upper east-side rooms, and this alone would be reason enough to stay here. That the park across the street serves as the site of virtually all of Portland's main festivals also makes it a good choice if you're in town for one of these festivals. (If you're planning a weekend visit, be sure to find out if there's a festival scheduled; depending on your interest in the event, you'll either find this to be a great location, or you might not want to deal with the crowds.) Otherwise, this standard corporate high-rise doesn't have a whole lot of character, though there is a nice Japanese-style garden outside the front door. Most of the guest rooms have small balconies, and if you ask for a room overlooking the river, throw back the glass door to the balcony and think about the fact that the view used to be of a noisy freeway (it was torn out to build the park). All the rooms have been recently redone.
