Kualoa Ranch and Activity Club
This once-working ranch now has five different adventure packages covering two dozen activities on its 4,000 acres. Ko Olina Golf Club
Golf Digest named this 6,867-yard, par-72 course one of "America's Top 75 Resort Courses" in 1992. The Ted Robinson-designed course has rolling fairways and elevated tee and water features. The signature hole -- the 12th, a par-3 -- has an elevated tee that sits on a rock garden with a cascading waterfall. Wait until you get to the 18th hole, where you'll see and hear water all around you -- seven pools begin on the right side of the fairway and slope down to a lake. A waterfall is on your left off the elevated green. You'll have no choice but to play the left and approach the green over the water. Book in advance; this course is crowded all the time. Facilities include a driving range, locker rooms, Jacuzzi, steam rooms, and a restaurant and bar. Lessons are available.
Waimea Falls Park
If you have only a day to spend on Oahu and want to see an ancient hula, sniff tropical flowers, go kayaking along the shore, hike to archaeological sites and a waterfall, and play the games of ancient Hawaii (such as spear throwing and lawn bowling), there's only one place to be: Waimea Falls Park. This is the perfect family place. You can also explore remnants of the old Hawaiian settlements in a scenic 1,800-acre river valley that's full of tropical blooms; watch authentic demonstrations of the ancient hula by the park's own halau (school); and see cliff divers swan-dive into a pool fed by a 45-foot waterfall. Other activities include riding a mountain bike, paddling a kayak, and walking along the Elehaha River into the jungle.

Ohana Waikiki West
On the upside, this chain hotel has lots of guest services and facilities, including a lounge, room service, and lots of shops (including a pharmacy). The downside is that it's located on a very noisy part of Kuhio Avenue. The rooms were redone in 1995; all have refrigerators, and some have kitchenettes. Waikiki Beach is 2 blocks away, and restaurants, shopping, and nightlife are all no more than a 10-minute walk. International Market Place is across the street.
Ohana Reef Towers
This is a great deal for families: Four of you can easily stay here for $139, with your own kitchenette to help keep dining costs down. The Reef is one of Outrigger's larger hotels, consisting of two 13-story towers. The recently renovated rooms are larger than those at some nearby Outriggers, and come with a few more amenities than those in the chain's lower-priced hotels. The lanais, however, are very small. The huge lobby is filled with shops. The Polynesian Showroom features some of Hawaii's top entertainers. Waikiki Sand Villa
Budget travelers, take note: This very affordable hotel is located on the quieter side of Waikiki, across the street from the Ala Wai Canal. The 12-story tower has medium-size rooms, most with a double bed plus a single bed (convenient for families) and a lanai with great views of the green mountains. The adjacent 3-story building features studio apartments with kitchenettes (refrigerator, stove, and microwave). Another plus for families is the Nintendo system in every room (available for $7.95/hr.). For guests arriving early or catching a late flight there's a hospitality room (complete with shower) for late checkout, and a luggage-storage area.
