During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Knott's Soak City USA
Themed to replicate San Diego's surfer towns around the 1950s and 1960s, this 32-acre water park is San Diego's only facility of its type. There are 22 slides of all shapes and sizes, a 500,000-gallon wave pool, a 1/4-mile lazy river, and assorted snack facilities. The park is located about 25 minutes south of downtown, just north of the border line.
Timken Museum of Art
How many art museums invite you to see great works of art, free of charge? How many of them have smiling guards who welcome guests as graciously as the Timken's? This jewel-like repository houses the Putnam Foundation's collection of 19th-century American paintings and works by European old masters, as well as a worthy display of Russian icons. Yes, it's a small collection, but the marquee attractions include a Peter Paul Rubens, Portrait of a Young Man in Armor; San Diego's only Rembrandt, St. Bartholomew; and a masterpiece by Eastman Johnson, The Cranberry Harvest. You'll find a spot apiece for works by Bierstadt, Pissaro, Corot, and Cézanne. Since you can tour all of the museum in well under an hour, the Timken also makes for an easy introduction to fine art for younger travelers (pick up a copy of the Children's Gallery Guide for $2). Docents are available Tuesday from 10am to noon and 1 to 3pm; Wednesday and Thursday from 10 to noon; or by appointment.
House of Pacific Relations International Cottages
This cluster of 17 charming one- and two-room cottages disseminates information about the culture, traditions, and history of 28 countries. Light refreshments are served, and outdoor lawn programs are presented by one of the nations every Sunday, 2-3pm, March through October. The adjacent United Nations Building houses an international gift shop where you can buy jewelry, toys and books, and UNICEF greeting cards (tel. 619/233-5044); it's open daily from 10am to 4pm.
Crone's Cobblestone Cottage Bed & Breakfast
After just 1 night at this magnificently restored Craftsman bungalow, you'll feel like an honored guest rather than a paying customer. Artist and bookmaker Joan Crone lives in the architectural award-winning addition to her 1913 home, which is a designated historical landmark. Guests have the run of the entire house, including a book-filled, wood-paneled den and antique-filled living room. Both cozy guest rooms have antique beds, goose-down pillows and comforters, and eclectic bedside reading. They share a full bathroom; the Eaton Room also has a private half bathroom. You can rent the entire house (two bedrooms plus the den), to sleep five or six, for $285. Crone lends a calm and craftsman aesthetic to the surroundings, aided by a pair of cats, who peer in from their side of the house. Mission Hills, the neighborhood a half-mile west of Hillcrest, is one of San Diego's treasures, and lots of other historic homes can be explored along quiet streets.
Bristol Hotel
If you're looking for a basic business hotel with a sunny splash of style, you can do no better than the economical Bristol, which boasts a boxy, IKEA-esque geometric decor accented by energetic primary colors and an admirable collection of late-20th-century pop art from Warhol, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, and Haring. Everything still feels crisply new from the 2001 makeover that rendered this formerly baroque property almost unrecognizable. Though it doesn't offer many on-site amenities to keep you around during the day, and the staff could be warmer, these brightly modern rooms are fun to come home to. Each morning a nice breakfast spread is laid out in the downstairs Daisies Bistro, which offers all-day dining and a cozy, after-work bar.
Heritage Park Bed & Breakfast Inn
This exquisite 1889 Queen Anne mansion is set in a Victorian park -- an artfully arranged cobblestone cul-de-sac lined with historic buildings saved from the wrecking ball and assembled here, in Old Town, as a tourist attraction. Most of the Inn's rooms are in the main house, with a handful of equally appealing choices in an adjacent 1887 Italianate companion. Owner Nancy Helsper is an amiable and energetic innkeeper with an eye for every necessary detail; she's always eager to share tales of these homes' fascinating history and how they crossed paths with Nancy and her husband, Charles. A stay here is about surrendering to the pampering of afternoon tea, candlelight breakfast, and a number of romantic extras (champagne and chocolates, dear?) available for special celebrations. Like the gracious parlors and porches, each room is outfitted with meticulous period antiques and luxurious fabrics; the small staff provides turndown service and virtually anything else you might require. Although the fireplaces are all ornamental, some rooms have whirlpool baths. In the evenings, vintage films are shown on DVD with popcorn in the Victorian parlor.
