Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site
Under the auspices of the National Park Service, this area of about 2 blocks around Auburn Avenue was established to preserve the birthplace and boyhood surroundings of the nation's foremost civil rights leader. Designated a National Historic Site, these blocks include King's boyhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King's father and grandfather were ministers and King served as a co-pastor. Free tours of King's birth home start at Fire Station No. 6, which was recently restored by the NPS; tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the National Parks Service Visitor Center, 450 Auburn Ave.Other Auburn Avenue attractions, not under NPS auspices, include The King Center, where King is buried (see the previous listing), and the APEX Museum. Several more surrounding blocks have been designated as a preservation district. This area is known as Sweet Auburn. John Wesley Dobbs, maternal grandfather of former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson, is the person who first called it such, after Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village, the first line of which reads, "Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plains." Mayor Jackson says his grandfather called the area "sweet" because the keys to black liberation existed here in the form of "the three b's -- bucks, ballots, and books."There is a visitor center at 450 Auburn Ave., across from the King Center. It provides a complete orientation to area attractions and includes a theater for audiovisual and interpretive programs, interactive exhibits, and a bookstore. The visitor center is fronted by a beautifully landscaped plaza with a reflecting pool, King's crypt (which his wife had returned to the site several years ago), and an outdoor amphitheater for National Park Service programs.

Yellow River Game Ranch
Bordering the Yellow River, this 24-acre animal preserve offers close encounters of the 4-legged kind -- a chance to view, pet, feed, and generally mingle with some 600 animals (always including quite a few babies) who live in open enclosures or right out in the open, along a 1-mile oak- and hickory-shaded forest trail. Owner Art Rilling knows every animal on the ranch by name and can give you chapter and verse on each one's personality, preferences, and in some cases, romantic history. The animals know they're among friends here and are highly socialized, so you have a unique chance to study them up close. Keep in mind that all these animals smell like, well, animals. If a barnyard atmosphere bothers you, don't visit.Inhabitants include donkeys named Rhett and Scarlett, Georgia black bears that stand up and beg for marshmallows, goats, dozens of rabbits in Bunny Burrows (kids can pet the bunnies), an assortment of interesting-looking chickens, a herd of buffalo, sheep, burros, goats, ponies, a skunk named General Sherman (we are in Atlanta, after all), and a groundhog named General Beauregard Lee who lives in a white colonnaded Southern mansion complete with miniature satellite dish.Consider packing a picnic lunch. There are tables throughout the property, and one especially nice picnic area overlooks the river.

Ebenezer Baptist Church
Founded in 1886, Ebenezer was a spiritual center of the civil rights movement from 1960 to 1968, during which time Martin Luther King, Jr., served as co-pastor. King's grandfather, the Rev. A. D. Williams, dedicated the church to "the advancement of black people and every righteous and social movement." His son-in-law and successor, Martin Luther King, Sr., worked for voting rights and other aspects of black civil and social advancement, following Williams's activist example. Later, Martin Luther King, Jr., would join his ancestors in pursuing justice for African Americans.The congregation has built a new sanctuary directly across the street, but the older building, where Martin Luther King, Jr., preached, continues to be open to the public. Short but informative tours of the sanctuary, conducted by members of the Ebenezer congregation, are given Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 9am to 2pm, and Sunday 2 to 4pm. One of the best things to do is attend a Sunday morning worship service in the new sanctuary. The public is welcome -- and you'll realize just how welcome when the members of the congregation leave their seats at the beginning of the service to shake the hands of as many visitors as possible. It's a living testimonial to all that the church's most famous son stood for. Sunday services are at 7:45am and 10:45am. The sanctuary is usually packed, so it's a good idea to arrive well ahead of time. Groups of 6 or more should call the church office at tel. 404/688-7263 to make reservations. An ecumenical service also takes place here every year during King week (January 9-15).

Mercifully, this airport hotel is not under the normal flight pattern. That, and its triple-paned windows, makes it quieter than many hotels, especially the less expensive ones. (For the very quietest location, ask for a room with a city view.) The rooms are a good size, with tasteful, contemporary decor, and one king-size or two double beds. The bathrooms have generous vanities, though the sound of the toilet flush will make you think you're already on the plane. For an excellent value, ask for one of the Executive Corner rooms, which are only $20 more than the standard rooms. They're twice as big, though, and are spacious enough to accommodate a sofa and two easy chairs in the sitting area. The bathrooms have separate showers and garden tubs. Suites are quite large and luxurious. Twenty-five of the standard rooms have been modified for guests with disabilities.Facilities: 2 restaurants; sports bar; outdoor swimming pool; small indoor heated pool; lit tennis court; extremely large and well-equipped fitness center for a $6 fee (aerobics classes, personal trainers, massage available); Jacuzzi; 24-hr. concierge; complimentary airport shuttle; business center; salon; 24-hr. room service; laundry service.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Buckhead
A stone's throw from several excellent restaurants and close to all that upscale Buckhead has to offer, this is an economical choice for business and leisure visitors who are more interested in location than luxury. There's nothing fancy about the Fairfield Inn except for the surrounding neighborhood. The large rooms are well-maintained and pleasant, with high ceilings. If you're in town for an extended stay, try to book one of the recently-added suites, which have minifridges, microwaves, 32" TVs, DVD players, and CD players, along with a king-size bed and a sofa bed. Bathrooms are fairly standard, with the vanity and sink conveniently located in the room. Rooms near the elevators and ice machines can be a little noisy, so ask for one away from those locations.

Embassy Suites Atlanta Buckhead
This all-suite hotel stacks up well to the more expensive hotels in the same area. A favorite with business travelers, the suite arrangement is also ideal for families, and the location can't be beat, with Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza, and many fine restaurants within walking distance. The Buckhead MARTA station is less than a block away, so it's easy to connect quickly with other parts of the city and with the airport.Each elegantly appointed 800-square-foot, two-room suite was renovated in 2004 and has a queen-size, fold-out sofa in addition to a bed. Bathrooms offer marble vanities and hair dryers, and there is a separate sink in the bedroom. Although the entire hotel is accessible to travelers with disabilities (most of the participants in the wheelchair division of the Peachtree Road Race stay here), 10 of the suites are completely equipped for those with disabilities; 2 have roll-in showers.Two popular bonuses: the complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast served in the 16-story atrium lobby (check out the waterfall!), and complimentary cocktails served each afternoon.
