During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

The Seattle Aquarium
Although it's not nearly as large and impressive as the Monterey Bay Aquarium or the Oregon Coast Aquarium, is still quite enjoyable and presents well-designed exhibits dealing with the water worlds of the Puget Sound region. The star attractions here are the playful river otters and the sea otters, as well as the giant octopus. There's also an underwater viewing dome from which you get a fish's-eye view of life beneath the waves, and each September you can watch salmon return up a fish ladder to spawn. Of course, there are also plenty of small tanks that allow you to familiarize yourself with the many fish of the Northwest, a beautiful coral-reef tank, and several smaller tanks that exhibit fish from distant waters. Life on the Edge focuses on tide-pool life along Washington's Pacific Ocean and Puget Sound shores, while Life of a Drifter highlights jellyfish.

Soundbridge Seattle Symphony Music Discovery Center
Perhaps you're an accomplished musician but have always longed to conduct an orchestra, or perhaps you've never had much musical talent at all but dream of playing the cello like Yo-Yo Ma. At this fascinating little music exploration center, you can at least see what it feels like to be first chair in the string section of the symphony. Not only is there a listening bar with more than 500 classical recordings, but there are also interactive exhibits that let you play a cello, tickle the ivories, or conduct a virtual orchestra. There's an exhibit on the science of music as well.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Seattle area, including:

Sorrento Hotel
With its wrought-iron gates, palm trees in the entrance courtyard, and plush seating in the octagonal lobby, the Sorrento, which first opened its doors in 1909, has a classic elegance and old-world atmosphere. All of the rooms were recently renovated, making them every bit the equal of the elegant lobby. The guest rooms here are among the finest in the city: No two are alike, and most are set up for business travelers. Although more than half the units are suites, many provide little more space than you get in a standard room. The hotel boasts commanding views of downtown Seattle from its setting high on First Hill, yet downtown is only a few (steep) blocks away (and there's complimentary limousine service if you don't feel like walking). Ask for a room on the west side of the hotel, where you'll have a view of the city and Puget Sound. The hotel's dining room is a dark, clubby place; in the lounge, which has live jazz piano, you can get light meals, afternoon tea, and cocktails. Cafe tables are set up in the hotel's courtyard in the summer.

Moore Hotel
Located in a historic landmark building 2 blocks from both Pike Place Market and the Belltown restaurant and nightlife district, this hotel has benefited from recent room renovations, making it a good choice for young and adventurous travelers on a tight budget. If you've ever traveled through Europe on the cheap, you'll know what to expect from this place. It's not fancy, and if you aren't in a renovated room on a floor with renovated hallways, the place can seem a bit dreary. However, if you request one of the updated suites, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the stylishly modern large rooms with hardwood floors, full kitchens, and big windows. Ask for a room with a view of Puget Sound. The lobby, with its marble, tiles, and decorative moldings, hints at the Moore's historic character, but beyond that, this is more budget accommodation than historic hotel. There's a hip restaurant/lounge on the premises, as well as an adjacent theater that stages rock concerts. If you want to be in the heart of town at budget rates, this is the place.

The Bacon Mansion Bed & Breakfast
As the name implies, the Bacon Mansion is a big place -- a 9,000-square-foot Tudor built in 1909, to be precise -- and has all the accoutrements of a mansion: crystal chandelier, grand piano, huge dining-room table, library. Located on a shady stretch of Broadway, 2 blocks beyond Capitol Hill's busy commercial area, the inn combines a quiet residential feel with proximity to a youth-oriented shopping and dining scene. Decor includes a mix of antiques and period reproductions, with an abundance of floral prints. Although you may catch a glimpse of the Space Needle from the Capitol Suite, other rooms lack views. Two units are located in the old carriage house.
