Gardner Village
This quaint village is a cluster of restored historic homes and buildings surrounding Gardner Mill, a flour mill built by Scottish immigrant Archibald Gardner in 1877. Brass plaques tell the stories of each of the historic structures. The mill, which is on the National Historic Register, now houses a large store specializing in country furniture and gift items, as well as Archibald's Restaurant. Close to two dozen shops in the other historic buildings, connected by red brick paths, sell a wide range of items, including art, crafts, clothing, candy, quilts, dolls, and home furnishings. There's also a spa, a bakery, and a picturesque duck pond. Plan to spend at least an hour here.

Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine
The world's largest open-pit copper mine, at 2 1/2 miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep, is quite a sight to see, and almost as fascinating are the huge -- and we do mean huge -- trucks that transport the ore. The visitor center, 2,000 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine, offers a spectacular view, and you might even see an explosion, as rock is blasted away to expose more copper ore. In addition to the observation area, the visitor center has interactive exhibits -- including 3-D microscopes for examining minerals -- and offers a 14-minute video presentation that relates the mine's history and geology and describes its operations. Proceeds from admission fees are donated to local charities. Allow about 1 hour.

Joseph Smith Memorial Building
Formerly the historic Hotel Utah, this magnificent building has been renovated and converted into offices, meeting spaces, restaurants, and reception areas (it's very popular for wedding receptions). Between 1911 and 1987, this was a world-renowned hotel; the lobby retains its art-glass ceiling and massive marble pillars, and the architectural details have been lovingly restored throughout. It's worth a stop for a peek inside.There are 200 computers in the FamilySearch Center (tel. 801/240-4383), and a staff to help with your genealogical research. A big-screen 500-seat theater offers free (but ticket required, call tel. 801/240-4383 for schedule and to reserve a ticket) showings of an hour-long movie about the life of Christ. Allow half an hour to an hour and a half.

The Armstrong Mansion Bed & Breakfast
This stately red-brick mansion exudes an atmosphere of splendor and luxury. The B&B is an opulent Queen Anne-style Victorian home decorated with antiques and reproductions. It features such architectural delights as stained-glass windows and an intricately carved oak staircase. The four-story mansion, built in 1893 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was renovated in 1994 and now has an elevator. The stencils on the walls are reproductions of the mansion's original decorative patterns, discovered during renovation. A beautiful hotel brimming with 18th-century European elegance and style, The Inn at Temple Square is an exquisite little gem, offering wonderful service, food, and facilities. Built in 1930, the hotel has been restored and then some -- it offers an experience reminiscent of the grand hotels of old, but with a warm, homey touch. The lobby is like a living room, with fine artwork, couches, and chairs you can sink into. On the mezzanine level, you'll find a baby grand piano, a library with inviting reading areas, and a fireplace. Spacious guest rooms have a comfortable, old-world feel.The Inn is centrally located, just across from Temple Square and within easy walking distance of downtown theaters, restaurants, spectator sports, historic sites, and shopping. This huge, well-maintained campground is the closest camping and RV facility to downtown Salt Lake City. Facilities include two pools, a hot tub, two playgrounds, a video arcade, two coin-operated laundries, several bathhouses, a convenience store with RV supplies, propane, an RV and car wash, well-maintained grassy areas for tents, and large shade trees. It offers 14 instant phone hookups, 200 sites with 50-amp power, and a jogging/pet-walk/bicycle trail behind the campground. RVers who plan to hook up to the campground's water supply will need regulators to control the erratic water pressure. Bus route 50 heads east on North Temple to downtown sights.
