During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Bay Escape
This 1-hour air-conditioned cruise will take you past Millionaires' Row and the Venetian Islands for just $15. There's also a food stand and cash bar. The tours are bilingual.

Lowe Art Museum
Located on the University of Miami campus, the Lowe Art Museum has a dazzling collection of 8,000 works that include American paintings, Latin American art, Navajo and Pueblo Indian textiles, and Renaissance and baroque art. Traveling exhibits such as Rolling Stone magazine's photo collection also stop here. For the most part, the Lowe is known for its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and, as compared to the more modern MOCA, Bass, and Miami Art Museum, features mostly European and international art hailing back to ancient times.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)
MOCA boasts an impressive collection of internationally acclaimed art with a local flavor. It is also known for its forward thinking and ability to discover and highlight new artists. A high-tech screening facility allows for film presentations to complement the exhibitions. You can see works by Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Duane Michaels, and Claes Oldenberg, plus there are special exhibitions by such artists as Yoko Ono, Sigmar Polke, John Baldessari, and Goya. Guided tours are offered in English, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, German, and Italian.

Albion Hotel
An architectural masterpiece, originally designed in 1939 by internationally acclaimed architect Igor Polevitzky (of Havana's legendary Hotel Nacional fame), this sleek, modern, nautical-style hotel was once the local headquarters for Abbie Hoffman and the Students for a Democratic Society during the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami. Though it was totally renovated under the guidance of the hip hotel family, the Rubells, the hotel still maintains a neo-hippie democratic feeling of peace, love, and togetherness -- albeit with a hipster twist. Recently, however, the Albion has fallen off the hipster radar somewhat and is in desperate need of a sprucing up of its lobby and pool areas, which are showing serious signs of age. Despite its location 2 blocks from the beach, a large portholed pool and artificial beach are enough to keep you at the property and off the real beach. Rooms are industrial chic, and, for some people, not very warm, though recent renovations have taken a little of the edge off. Penthouse 9 is the hotel's most popular -- especially for private, in-room parties. The staff is wonderful and cookies at the registration desk make you feel as if you're a guest in someone's home and not a hotel. While there is no restaurant in the hotel, for lighter fare, the mezzanine-level Pantry provides snacks and continental breakfast items. For those looking for a scene, however, the Albion is definitely not the place to stay. It's more of a hotel for quiet, hip intellectual types rather than those who prefer to be on parade.

Hotel Ocean
This Mediterranean enclave, located smack in the middle of crazy Ocean Drive, remains somehow protected from the disarray, perhaps due to the lovely French-style courtyard, on which live jazz is often performed. The European-style hotel's 27 suites are great, with authentic Art Deco furniture, soundproofed windows, terraces facing the ocean, massive bathrooms with French toiletries, and original fireplaces that add to the coziness, even if you're not likely to use them. Funky and comfy new furniture, wood flooring, and Spanish tile bathrooms with brand new (and sublime), 20-square-foot showers are the latest additions to the hotel's rooms. Room 504 is the hotel's best-kept secret, with ocean view and private balcony for a reasonable $250 to $270. Insiders who stay at this hotel know to request the Deep Sleep experience upon checking in. This complimentary, by-request-only amenity includes a magnetic mattress (not recommended for pregnant women or patients with a pacemaker), known to create balance and rest the body, as well as an orthopedic pillow. The hotel's restaurant, Les Deux Fontaines, is known for its superb service, excellent seafood, and intimate Speakeasy Bar. The only drawback to this hotel is its lack of a pool, but since the beach is directly across the street, it really shouldn't stop you from staying at this excellent spot.

La Flora Hotel
It's hard to keep up with the number of Art Deco, streamlined hotels turned boutique hotels these days, but attention should be paid to La Flora, one of the quieter members of the club. A minimalist 28-room hotel located 1 block from the ocean, La Flora is a very peaceful alternative to the sceney boutique hotels that surround it. Rooms are extremely comfortable and stylish, with damask linens, soothing beige tones, and fabulous black-out curtains that come in handy when you've come in at the crack of dawn. As with many hotels on Collins Avenue, there's no pool, but La Flora's lobby bar, with frequent happy hours, is sporadically swimming with interesting people.
