Grand Ole Opry Museum
Adjacent to the Grand Ole Opry House, these exhibits are tributes to the performers who have appeared on the famous radio show over the years: Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, George Jones, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, and other longtime stars of the show. There are also about a dozen other exhibits on more recent performers. These museums are best visited in conjunction with a night at the Opry, so you might want to arrive early. Allow 20-30 minutes (just right for browsing prior to attending a performance of the Grand Ole Opry).
Belmont Mansion
Built in the 1850s by Adelicia Acklen, then one of the wealthiest women in the country, this Italianate villa is the city's most elegant historic home open to the public, and its grand salon is one of the most elaborately decorated rooms in any antebellum home in Tennessee. Belmont Mansion was originally built as a summer home, yet no expense was spared in its construction. On your tour of the mansion, you'll see rooms filled with period antiques, artwork, and marble statues. This museum also has an excellent gift shop full of reproduction period pieces. Allow at least 90 minutes to tour the mansion.Shutterbugs, take note: Unlike many museums and historic mansions, photography is permitted inside the Belmont Mansion. So stock up on film or digital-camera cartridges, and click away!
Stones River National Battlefield
On New Year's Eve 1862, what would become the bloodiest Civil War battle west of the Appalachian Mountains began just north of Murfreesboro along the Stones River. Though by the end of the first day of fighting the Confederates thought they were assured a victory, Union reinforcements turned the tide against the rebels. By January 3, the Confederates were in retreat and 23,000 soldiers lay dead or injured on the battlefield. Today, 351 acres of the battlefield are preserved. The site includes a national cemetery and the Hazen Brigade Monument, which was erected in 1863 and is the oldest Civil War memorial in the United States. In the visitor center you'll find a museum full of artifacts and details of the battle.
Sheraton Nashville Downtown
Popular with business travelers and legislators, the Sheraton provides the widest variety of amenities among Nashville's downtown high-rise hotels. The former rooftop restaurant no longer revolves, but the hotel boasts an atrium lobby with glass elevators to shuttle guests up and down the hotel's 28 floors, making for great views of the nearby Tennessee State Capitol. It's also within blocks of both The District, the city's main evening-entertainment area, and the Nashville Convention Center. Guests here have plenty of dining and drinking options and won't have to deal with the crowds and chaos that are found at the nearby Renaissance Nashville Hotel. The north-side rooms overlooking the capitol have the best views and there are club-level rooms with extra amenities for an additional charge. On the mezzanine level, there's a casual restaurant; the lobby has a sunken lounge area.
Hampton Inn-Vanderbilt
This reliable chain motel is located just 1 block from Vanderbilt University and 6 blocks from both Music Row and the Parthenon. Guest rooms are modern and comfortable. You'll find the king rooms particularly spacious. There are quite a few good restaurants within walking distance.
Embassy Suites Hotel
Among the newest hotels in the city's trendy West End/Vanderbilt University district, this property combines gracious service and impeccable decor. A sunny garden atrium features lush plants, cascading waterfalls, and overstuffed furniture arranged in cozy nooks. The spacious, tastefully appointed suites have comfy sleeper sofas, easy chairs, work desks, and lamps. With value-added touches including a generous, cooked-to-order breakfast (included in the room rate) and free shuttle service to downtown and other locales within a 2-mile radius of the hotel, this is a good choice for those who want to feel pampered without paying an arm and a leg. Downstairs, a new Omaha Steak House opened in 2003.
