Ferry Building Marketplace (and Farmers' Market)
There's no better way to enjoy a San Francisco morning than strolling this gourmet marketplace in the newly renovated Ferry Building and snacking your way through breakfast or lunch. Tasty tenants, open daily, include many of the best of Northern California's gourmet bounty: Cowgirl Creamery's Artisan Cheese Shop, Recchiuti Confections (amazing!), Scharffen Berger Chocolate, Acme breads, Wine Country's gourmet diner Taylor's Refresher, famed Vietnamese restaurant The Slanted Door, and myriad other restaurants, eateries, and wine bars.An added bonus and San Francisco favorite is the Farmers' Market, which is open alfresco on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm. Drop by to peruse stands hawking the finest Northern California fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy, flowers, and readymade snacks by a few local restaurants. San Francisco Zoo (& Children's Zoo)
Located between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Merced, in the southwest corner of the city, the San Francisco Zoo is a fun place to take the kids -- especially if you make it to the hands-on Children's Zoo. The zoo, which was founded at its present site adjacent to the ocean in 1929, is 125 acres, with 100 acres currently developed. Over 950,000 visitors come here annually to see the almost 950 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Exhibit highlights include the new Lipman Family Lemur Forest, a forest setting for five endangered species of lemurs from Madagascar that features interactive components for the visitor; Gorilla World, a tranquil setting for a family group of western lowland gorillas; Koala Crossing, which connects to the Australian WalkAbout exhibit with its kangaroos, wallaroos, and emu; Penguin Island, home to a large breeding colony of Magellanic Penguins; the Feline Conservation Center, a wooded sanctuary and breeding facility for endangered snow leopards and other small cats; and the Primate Discovery Center, home to rare and endangered monkeys. In the South American Tropical Forest building, a large green anaconda can be found as well as other South American reptile and bird species. Puente al Sur (Bridge to the South) has a pair of giant anteaters, a rare Baird's tapir, and capybaras. The Lion House is home to rare Sumatran and Siberian tigers and African lions. You can see the big cats fed every day at 2pm (except Mon). African Savanna, the latest exhibit, which opened in mid-2004, is a 3-acre mixed-species habitat with giraffes, zebras, antelope, and birds.The 6-acre Children's Zoo offers kids and their families opportunities for close-up encounters with domestic rare breeds of goats, sheep, ponies, and horses in the Family Farm. Touch and feel small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians along the Nature Trail (open Memorial Day to Labor Day), and gaze at eagles and hawks stationed on Hawk Hill. Visitors can see the inner-workings of the Koret Animal Resource Center, a thriving facility that houses the animals used in the educational outreach programs, and visit the incredible Insect Zoo. One of the Children's Zoo's most popular exhibits is the Meerkat and Prairie Dog exhibit, where kids can crawl through tunnels and play in sand, just like these two amazing burrowing species.Don't miss the Little Puffer miniature steam train, which takes passengers around a 1/3-mile track, and the historic Dentzel Carousel (both $2 per ride).
Pier 39
PIER 39 is a multilevel waterfront complex a few blocks east of Fisherman's Wharf. Constructed on an abandoned cargo pier, it is, ostensibly, a re-creation of a turn-of-the-20th-century street scene, but don't expect a slice of old-time maritime life. This is the busiest mall of the lot and allegedly welcomes 11 million visitors per year. It has more than 100 stores, 11 bay-view restaurants, a two-tiered Venetian carousel, a Hard Rock Cafe, and arcade and aquarium entertainment for the kids. And everything's slated toward helping you part with your travel dollars. It's the place that locals love to hate. That said, it does have a few perks: absolutely beautiful natural surroundings of bay views, fresh sea air, and hundreds of sunbathing sea lions lounging along its neighboring dock.

The Commodore Hotel
If you're looking to pump a little fun and fantasy into your vacation, this six-story downtown Art Deco building is the place to go. San Francisco hotelier Chip Conley of Joie de Vivre Hospitality is behind this groovy revamped hotel frequented by an eclectic mix of 20-somethings and everyday folks in search of reasonably priced accommodations. Stealing the show is the Red Room, a small New York-slick bar and lounge that reflects no other color of the spectrum but ruby red (you gotta see this one). The stylish lobby, which was renovated in 2000, comes in a close second, followed by the adjoining Titanic Café, a cute little diner that serves American fare for breakfast and lunch. The "Neo-Deco" rooms, all of which underwent upgrades through 2001, are simple but lively with bright colors, whimsical furnishings, pretty artwork, and small bathrooms refurbished in 1998.
Nob Hill Lambourne
One of San Francisco's top "business boutique" hotels, the Nob Hill Lambourne bills itself as an urban health spa, offering massages, aromatherapy, and yoga tapes to ease corporate-level stress. Even without this hook, the Lambourne deserves a top-of-the-class rating. Sporting one of San Francisco's most stylish interiors, the hotel flaunts the comfort and quality of its contemporary French design, made even better with its renovation in early 2003. Top-quality, hand-sewn mattresses and goose-down comforters complement a host of thoughtful in-room accouterments that include umbrellas and CD player/stereos. Bathrooms have oversize tubs. Suites include an additional sitting room. The wine hour starts at 6pm. Smokers should seek a room elsewhere: This place prohibits puffing.
The Hotel Majestic
Both tourists and business travelers adore the all-nonsmoking Majestic because it covers every professional need while retaining the ambience of a luxurious old-world hotel. It was built in 1902, and the lobby alone sweeps guests into another era, with an overabundance of tapestries, tasseled brocades, Corinthian columns, and intricate, lavish detail. Guest rooms are just as opulent, with French and English antiques; the centerpiece of many rooms is a large four-poster canopy bed. You'll also find custom-made, mirrored armoires and antique reproductions. All drapes, fabrics, and carpets were replaced in 1997. Beds got new spreads in 2002, and half the bathrooms and guest rooms underwent a $2-million renovation in 1999.Perks go beyond the usual. As well as bathrobes, two phones (one of which is portable), and umbrellas, the hotel offers complimentary faxes sent and received by the office (a nice touch!), fresh-baked cookies with turndown service, and well-lit desks. Some rooms have fireplaces. Their intimate and very atmospheric Avalon cocktail lounge has a beautiful French mahogany bar topped with marble and a collection of African butterflies.
