During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
ArtCenter/South Florida
Not exactly a museum in the classic sense of the word, ArtCenter/South Florida is a multichambered space where local artists display their works in all mediums -- from photography and sculpture to video and just about anything else that might exemplify their artistic nature. Admission is free and it's quite fun to mosey through the space viewing the various artists at work in their studios. Of course, all the art is for sale, but there's no pressure to buy. If you call ahead, you can schedule a guided tour of all the studios, which will give you extra insight into the exhibits. Otherwise, just wander and enjoy.
The Scott Rakow Youth Center
This center is a hidden treasure on Miami Beach. The two-story facility boasts an ice-skating rink, bowling alleys, a basketball court, gymnasium equipment, and full-time supervision for kids in the fourth grade and up. Call for a complete schedule of organized events. The only drag is that it's not open to adults (except on Sun, family day).
Lowe Art Museum
Located on the University of Miami campus, the Lowe Art Museum has a dazzling collection of 8,000 works that include American paintings, Latin American art, Navajo and Pueblo Indian textiles, and Renaissance and baroque art. Traveling exhibits such as Rolling Stone magazine's photo collection also stop here. For the most part, the Lowe is known for its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and, as compared to the more modern MOCA, Bass, and Miami Art Museum, features mostly European and international art hailing back to ancient times.
Villa Paradiso
This guesthouse, like Brigham Gardens, is more like a cozy apartment house than a hotel. There's no elegant lobby or restaurant, but the amicable hosts, Lisa and Pascal Nicolle, are happy to give you a room key and advice on what to do. The recently renovated spacious apartments are simple but elegant -- hardwood floors, French doors, and stylish wrought-iron furniture -- and are remarkably quiet considering their location, a few blocks from Lincoln Road and all of South Beach's best clubs. All have full kitchens, and guests have a choice of either a queen or two double beds or foldout couches for extra friends. Bathrooms have recently been renovated with marble tile. All rooms overlook the hotel's pretty courtyard Garden.
Century Hotel
Although this hip hotel has been around for years, it was ahead of its time when it set up shop in the trendy South of Fifth area of South Beach. Before it became hip to hang here, artists, celebrities, musicians, and a slew of quirky, eccentric Warholian types chose the Century as their home away from home. Practically hidden next to Joia restaurant, the Century is a 1939 Hohauser masterpiece, which has been restored and fully modernized, with rooms featuring funky decor, hardwood floors, and a stellar marble bathroom with glass shower. There's no pool, but the beach is literally across the street, and the hotel is within walking distance of some of the hottest restaurants and bars in town. If you're one of those who is too cool to stay with the mainstream at The Shore Club, staying at the Century is like telling people you live in the coolest apartment building in the hippest neighborhood.
Royal Hotel
There are several words to describe this mod, hipster hotel located in the heart of South Beach. Jetsonian, funkadelic, and, as the hotel proudly and aptly declares, "Barbarella at bedtime." What it really is, however, is truly different, in that the rooms' curvy, white plastic beds (less comfortable than chic) have headboards that double as bars. Designer Jordan Mozer of Barneys New York fame has managed to transform this historic Art Deco hotel into a trippy, 21st-century, state-of-the-art facility. Chaise longues are "digital," with attached computer and television. Italian marble, pastel colors, and large, newly tiled baths manage to successfully thwart a sterility that's all too common with many chic boutique hotels. One warning, though: Avoid the adjacent hotel bar, the Royal Bar -- it has obviously suffered from major neglect and is devoid of any of the fabulousness that has been showered on the hotel itself.
