During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Old State House
Built in 1713, this brick structure served as the seat of the colonial government before the Revolution, and as the state capitol until 1797. on July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians from the balcony of this building. In 1789, Pres. George Washington reviewed a parade from here. The exterior decorations are particularly interesting -- the clock was installed in place of a sundial, and the gilded lion and unicorn are reproductions of the original symbols of British rule that were ripped from the facade and burned the day the Declaration of Independence was read.Inside is the Bostonian Society's museum of the city's history. The society was founded in 1881 to save this building, which was badly deteriorated and, incredibly, was about to be sold and shipped to Chicago. Exhibits include an introductory video on the history of the building, a meter that illustrates the proximity of the Blue Line subway (which makes the floor vibrate), and displays that focus on the Revolutionary period and more recent history. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Leave the building, turn left, and walk half a block.

Nichols House Museum
A stroll around Beacon Hill can leave visitors wishing to know what the stately homes look like inside. This is one of the only places to satisfy your curiosity. This 1804 home is decorated with beautiful antique furnishings collected by several generations of the Nichols family. Its most prominent occupant, Rose Standish Nichols, was a suffragist and a pioneering landscape designer. Her legacy includes not just family heirlooms but objects she brought back from her many travels. Open days may vary, so call ahead.

Old Granary Burying Ground
This cemetery, established in 1660, was once part of Boston Common. You'll see the graves of patriots Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and James Otis; merchant Peter Faneuil (spelled "Funal"); and Benjamin Franklin's parents. Also buried here are the victims of the Boston Massacre (discussed below) and the wife of Isaac Vergoose, who is believed to be "Mother Goose" of nursery rhyme fame. Note that gravestone rubbing, however tempting, is illegal in Boston's historic cemeteries. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn left as you leave the cemetery and continue 1 1/2 blocks on Tremont Street.

The Lenox Hotel
The Lenox was the last word in hotels when it opened in 1900, and in its second century, it showcases that fin de siècle splendor everywhere, from the ornate lobby to the spacious, luxurious rooms. The hotel is popular with business travelers for many reasons: Its relatively small size and accommodating staff make it a welcome alternative to the huge convention hotels that dominate this neighborhood, and the hotel has a great location. The high-ceilinged guest rooms are large enough to contain sitting areas, and custom-designed wood furnishings and marble bathrooms add to the anything-but-generic vibe. The best accommodations are the 12 corner units with wood-burning fireplaces; rooms on the top two floors of the 11-story hotel have excellent views.Facilities: Well-regarded restaurant (contemporary American); bar; pub; small exercise room; bike rental; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; airport shuttle; business center; room service until 11pm; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities and wheelchair lift to the lobby are available.

Chandler Inn Hotel
The comfortable, unpretentious Chandler Inn is a bargain for its location, just 2 blocks from the Back Bay. The guest rooms, revamped in 2000, have individual climate control and tasteful contemporary-style furniture, including desks, small wardrobes, and TV armoires. Each holds a queen or double bed or two twin beds, though there's no room to squeeze in a cot. Bathrooms are tiny, and the one elevator in the eight-story inn can be slow, but the staff is welcoming and helpful. This is a gay-friendly hotel (Fritz, the bar next to the lobby, is a neighborhood gay hangout) and often books up early. Plan ahead.

Hilton Boston Logan Airport
Smack in the middle of the airport, the Hilton draws most of its guests from meetings, conventions, and recently canceled flights. It's convenient and well equipped for business travelers, and it's an excellent fallback for vacationers in search of a deal who don't mind a short commute to downtown. Guest rooms are large and tastefully furnished, with plenty of business features, including two-line speakerphones. The best units, on the higher floors of the 10-story building (which opened in 1999), afford sensational views of the airport and harbor. The big concern with a hotel this close to the runways is noise, but the picture-window views of approaching aircraft look like TV with the sound off. A shuttle bus connects the hotel to all airport locations; walkways also link the building to Terminals A (nearby) and E (a long walk). The Hyatt Harborside (discussed below) is the closest competition -- it's at the edge of the airport, on the water, which means less commotion outside but less convenient access to the T.Facilities: Restaurant (American); Irish pub; coffee counter; indoor lap pool; health club and spa; concierge; 24-hr. shuttle bus service to airport destinations, including car-rental offices and ferry dock, with on-bus electronic check-in; well-equipped business center; 24-hr. room service; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning; executive-level rooms.
