During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Museum of the Oregon Territory
This small museum houses collections of historic memorabilia and old photos from this area. There's the obligatory covered wagon, as well as a display of Native American petroglyphs. Your admission ticket to this museum will also get you into the Stevens Crawford House, 603 Sixth St., a foursquare-style home that is furnished with late-19th-century antiques and looks as if the family just stepped out.

The Berry Botanic Garden
Originally founded as a private garden, the Berry Botanic Garden is now one of Portland's favorite public gardens. Among the highlights is a large, forestlike collection of mature rhododendron shrubs. There's also a native plant trail, a fern garden, and rock gardens with unusual plants. The garden is open by reservation only.

World Forestry Center Museum
Although Oregon depends less and less on the timber industry with each passing year, the World Forestry Center Museum is still busy educating visitors about the importance of our forest resources. Step inside the huge wooden main hall and you come face to bark with a very large and very lifelike tree. Press a button at its base and it tells you the story of how trees live and grow. In other rooms you can see exhibits on forests of the world, old-growth trees, a petrified wood exhibit, and a rain forest exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Institution. There are also interesting temporary exhibits staged here throughout the year, from photographic exhibits to displays of the woodworker's art.

Sullivan's Gulch B&B
Set on a quiet, tree-shaded street just a couple of blocks off busy Northeast Broadway, this inn is a 1907 home filled with an eclectic mix of Mission-style furniture, Asian artifacts, and contemporary art. Our favorite room here is the Northwest Room, which is decorated with Northwest Coast Native American masks and has an old Hudson's Bay Company blanket on the bed. There's also a room that draws on Montana and Western art for its decor. A pretty little deck out back is a pleasant place to hang out in summer. The inn is popular with gay and lesbian travelers, and with the MAX stop just a few blocks away it's convenient to get downtown.

5th Avenue Suites Hotel
Located a block from Pioneer Courthouse Square and within a few blocks of the best downtown shopping, this unpretentious yet sophisticated hotel is housed in what was originally a department store. Artwork by Northwest artists fills the lobby, and in the afternoon there are complimentary tastings of Oregon and Washington wines.Guest rooms, most of which are suites, are furnished in a turn-of-the-century country style but also have fax machines and two-line speakerphones for 21st-century convenience. Plush chairs and beds with padded headboards and luxurious comforters assure that business travelers (and others) will be comfortable in their home away from office. Bathrooms have lots of counter space. In the suites, sliding French doors with curtains divide the living room from the bedrooms, but don't provide much privacy. The Red Star Tavern and Roast House is a popular and traditionally styled restaurant specializing in upscale American comfort food.

The Heathman Lodge
Mountain lodge meets urban chic at this suburban Vancouver hotel adjacent to the Vancouver Mall, and though it's a 20-minute drive to downtown Portland, the hotel is well placed for exploring both the Columbia Gorge and Mount St. Helens. With its log, stone, and cedar-shingle construction, this hotel conjures up the Northwest's historic mountain lodges. As at Timberline Lodge, this hotel is filled with artwork and embellished with rugged Northwest-inspired craftwork, including totem poles, Eskimo kayak frames, and Pendleton blankets. Guest rooms feature a mix of rustic pine and peeled-hickory furniture as well as rawhide lampshades and Pendleton-inspired bedspreads.
