During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Diaspora Vibe Art Gallery
This culturally charged art complex is a funky artist hangout and is the home to some of the greatest artworks of Miami's diverse Caribbean, Latin American, and African-American cultures. The gallery has two seasons of shows, often focusing on emerging artists. During the winter, three artists are selected by the gallery to travel to and exhibit their works in Paris. On the last Friday of every month, from May through October, the gallery holds its fabulous cocktail-infused "Final Fridays." A new artist's work is spotlighted inside, while outside in the courtyard are live music performances and readings of poetry and folk tales. Delicious Caribbean cuisine is also served while the who's who of Miami's cognoscenti gather here to recharge their cultural batteries.

Latin American Art Museum
In addition to the permanent collection of contemporary artists from Spain and Latin America, this 3,500-square-foot museum hosts monthly exhibitions of works from Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Usually, the exhibitions focus on a theme, such as international women or surrealism. It's not a major attraction, but it's worth a stop if you're interested in Latin American art. On the same block, you'll find great design stores and a few other galleries.

Biltmore Hotel Tour
Take advantage of these free Sunday walking tours to enjoy the hotel's beautiful grounds. The Biltmore is chock-full of history and mystery, including a few ghosts; go out there and see for yourself. In addition, there are also free weekly fireside sessions that are open to the public and presented by Miami Storytellers. Learn about the hotel's early days and rich stories of the city's past. These wonderful sessions are held in the main lobby by the fireplace and are accompanied by a glass of champagne. Call ahead to confirm.

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel Dezerland Beach and Spa
Designed by car enthusiast Michael Dezer, the Dezerland is where Happy Days meets Miami Beach, with its visible homage to hot rods and antique cars. Visitors, many of them German tourists, are welcomed by a 1959 Cadillac stationed by the front door, one of a dozen mint-condition classics around the grounds and lobby. This kitschy beachfront hotel recently underwent a $2 million renovation of its guest rooms, lobby, and public areas. Most recently, the hotel added the Nirvana Spa, but the best part about this place is the cheesy restaurant in which you dine in classic cars. The rooms are still somewhat lackluster, despite the fact that the renovation added new drapes, bedspreads, furniture, and wall coverings. Though named for various fabulous cars, these, alas, are the Pintos of hotel rooms -- nothing more than a typical motel room. The lovely pool, however, has its requisite Cadillac -- a mosaic pink one, located at the bottom. For '50s kitsch and car fanatics, this is a fun place to stay; otherwise, you may think you were taken for a ride.

Sheraton Bal Harbour Beach Resort
This hotel has the best location in Bal Harbour, on the ocean and just across from the swanky Bal Harbour Shops. Everyone from the New York Yankees to Bill and Hillary Clinton have stayed here, and Bill even jogged along the beach with local fitness enthusiasts. It's one of the nicest Sheratons I've seen, with a glass-enclosed two-story atrium lobby that's especially welcoming. A spectacular staircase wraps itself around a cascading fountain full of wished-on pennies. A lushly landscaped pool area reminds you of an island resort, and a waterslide will keep the kids occupied while you work on your tan. Speaking of kids, a maximum of four children through the age of 17 stay free in existing bedding with at least one adult. Rooms are large and fairly standard as far as Sheratons are concerned, with the exception of oceanview rooms, which have balconies. Make sure to ask for a free coupon book with over $800 in savings at the Bal Harbour Shops.Facilities: 4 restaurants; lounges; 2 outdoor heated pools (1 kids' pool); nearby golf course; 2 outdoor tennis courts; large state-of-the-art health club and spa; watersports equipment; children's programs; game room; concierge; tour desk; business center; shopping arcade; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning.

Hotel Inter-Continental Miami
This hotel presents a serious catch-22: It's got a front-row view of all of Miami Beach, Biscayne Bay, the Miami River, and the Atlantic Ocean, but it is also located in downtown Miami. If it's a view that you want, then you should stay here; but if you're more interested in location, you may want to reconsider. With the decidedly threatening presence of the hyperluxurious Mandarin Oriental just over the Brickell Bridge, the Inter-Continental had no choice but to keep up with the competition. A $34 million renovation has brought it up to speed, rendering it downtown proper's swankiest hotel. It boasts more marble than the Liberace Museum (both inside and out), but it is warmed by bold colors and a fancified Florida flavor. The five-story lobby features a marble centerpiece sculpture by Henry Moore and is topped by a pleasing skylight. Plenty of plants, palm trees, and eclectic furnishings also add charm and enliven the otherwise stark space. Perfectly designed for business travelers, each room is outfitted with a desk and Internet-ready telephone lines, but is not fabulous. They're really just swankier versions of the rooms in a typical chain hotel, albeit a little more froufrou and elaborate, with marble bathrooms, upholstered seating areas, and sit-in windowsills. Some suites have fully equipped kitchenettes. Guests who stay in the Inter-Continental are big fish in the very small sea of desolate downtown Miami, but don't worry about your safety -- this hotel is extremely secure. Note: Construction on several new condominiums adjacent to the Inter-Continental may disturb the deafening silence common to downtown Miami.Facilities: 3 restaurants; 2 lounges; Olympic-size outdoor heated pool; access to nearby golf course; spa; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; large business center; shopping arcade; salon and barbershop; 24-hr. room service; coin-op washers and dryers; 24-hr. laundry and dry-cleaning service.
