During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

San Diego Miniature Railroad & Carousel
Located just east of the zoo entrance, these antiquated enticements never fail to delight the pre-teen set. The open-air railroad takes a 3-minute journey through a grove of eucalyptus trees, while the charming carousel is one of the last in the world to still offer a ring grab (free ride if you seize the brass one). The carousel, built in 1910, is a classic, with hand-carved wood frogs, horses, and pigs.

Mount Woodson Golf Club
One of San Diego County's most dramatic golf courses, Mount Woodson is a par-70, 6,180-yard course on 150 beautiful acres. The award-winning 18-hole course, which opened in 1991, meanders up and down hills, across bridges, and around granite boulders. Elevated tees provide striking views of Ramona and Mount Palomar, and on a clear day you can see for almost 100 miles. It's easy to combine a game of golf with a weekend getaway to Julian (see chapter 11). Greens fees for 18 holes (including mandatory cart) are $65 Monday through Thursday, $85 Friday and Sunday, $90 on Saturday. Early-bird, afternoon, and twilight rates are available, and seniors get a discount. Mount Woodson is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Okay, so it's not high culture as we know it, but this museum is cool and pleasing, and worth 30 to 60 minutes of your time, especially if you have kids in tow. Six permanent, scale-model railroads depict Southern California's transportation history and terrain with an astounding attention to miniature details -- the exhibits occupy a 24,000-square-foot space. Children will enjoy the hands-on Lionel trains, and train buffs of all ages will appreciate the interactive multimedia displays. Allow a half-hour to an hour for your visit.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the San Diego area, including:

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego
A second, 33-story tower was recently added to the Grand Hyatt, doubling the number of guest rooms and greatly increasing the facility's meeting space. San Diego's largest hotel continues to be one of the city's most successful operations, even though a behemoth with 1,625 rooms can't offer much in the way of personalized attention -- in fact, complaints about tardy room service are common. All the public spaces are grand and airy, sporting a limestone-and-marble neoclassical theme; there aren't many subtle notes here, the opulence is never understated. But you'll enjoy all the expense-account amenities, including a 40th-floor lounge that offers stunning views over the city and San Diego Bay (the Hyatt is the tallest waterfront lodging on the West Coast). Guest rooms are quiet with high-quality but standard Hyatt-issue furnishings. Bathrooms have ample counter space, and the facility gets kudos for superior service for travelers with disabilities. Request a corner unit for optimal views. The hotel is generally the first choice of large conventions, so rack rates can be deceptively high. Don't let them scare you off if you want to stay here -- weekend rates in particular can be a great deal.

Empress Hotel of La Jolla
The Empress Hotel offers spacious quarters with traditional furnishings a block or two from La Jolla's main drag and the ocean. It's quieter here than at the premium clifftop properties, and you'll sacrifice little other than direct ocean views (many rooms on the top floors afford a partial view.) If you're planning to explore La Jolla on foot, the Empress is a good base, and it exudes a classiness many comparably priced chains lack, with warm service to boot. Rooms are tastefully decorated (and regularly renovated), and well equipped. Bathrooms are of average size but well appointed, and four "Empress" rooms have sitting areas with full-size sleeper sofas. Breakfast is set up next to a serene sun deck.

Best Western Inn by the Sea
Occupying an enviable location at the heart of La Jolla's charming village, this independently managed property puts guests just a short walk from the cliffs and beach. The low-rise tops out at five stories, with the upper floors enjoying ocean views (and the highest room rates). The Best Western (and the more formal Empress, a block away), offer a terrific alternative to pricier digs nearby. Rooms here are Best Western standard issue -- freshly maintained, but nothing special. All rooms do have balconies, though, and refrigerators are available at no extra charge; the hotel offers plenty of welcome amenities.
