During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Church of the Good Shepherd
Built in 1924, this is Beverly Hills's oldest house of worship. In 1950, Elizabeth Taylor and her first husband, Nicky Hilton, were married here. The funerals of Alfred Hitchcock, Gary Cooper, Eva Gabor, and Frank Sinatra were all held here as well.

Hollywood History Museum
The historic Max Factor Building -- Max Factor was the patriarch of the Hollywood make-up industry -- has finally been restored to its original 1935 Art Deco splendor and is now the home of the Hollywood History Museum, which features thousands of famous and rare props, costumes, scripts, cameras, awards, and numerous photos and posters from the television, stage, and recording industries. It's arranged for the visitor to experience Hollywood chronologically -- from the Silent Era and Golden Era to current production technology and a glimpse into the future of the industry. The museum, located across from the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, also houses a library, a screening room, an education center, and a museum-studio gift shop. Private guided tours are available upon request.

Mulholland Drive
Los Angeles is the only major city in the world divided by a mountain range, and the road on top of this range is the famous Mulholland Drive. It travels 21 miles along the peaks and canyons of Hollywood Hills and the Santa Monica mountains, separating the Los Angeles basin from the San Fernando Valley. The winding road provides amazing views of the city (particularly at night) and offers many opportunities to pull over and enjoy the view 1,400 feet above sea level.Completed in 1924, it's named after William Mulholland, the engineer of the aqueduct connecting L.A. and the Valley. Yes, there are celebrities up in them thar hills -- Marlon Brando, Kevin Costner, Barney -- but you'll never find them, as most of the mansions are well hidden. You don't need to drive the whole road to get the full effect. From Cahuenga Boulevard (near the Hollywood Bowl), take the Mulholland Drive turnoff heading west. After a few miles, you'll see the scenic view area on your left. Park at the small paved parking lot (which closes at sunset), ooh and aah over the view of the L.A. basin, and then drive a few miles farther west until you spot the other scenic view area on your right (dirt this time) overlooking the Valley. The whole trip should take you less than an hour. Tip: Don't drive here after 3pm on the weekdays -- the rush hour traffic in this area is horrible. Also, no matter what your map says, there is no Mulholland Drive exit off of U.S. 101; you have to get on Cahuenga Blvd.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Los Angeles area, including:

Farmer's Daughter
Most people end up at the Farmer's Daughter hotel fortuitously because they're waiting to be the next contestant on The Price is Right. The CBS Studios across the street recommend the budget motel to its game show fans, but I'm recommending it just because I dig this chic little lodge. It's cheery from the moment you walk in the lobby. Bright yellows and cool blues mix well with the country-kitsch theme: rooster wallpaper, faded barn-wood paneling, denim bedspreads, cow-skin rugs, and a parade of inflatable animals that float around the pool. It's obvious that someone with smart fashion sense and a little money turned a dumpy motel into an oasis of stylish affordability for people like me who drive Jettas and wear flip-flops in the winter. Money-saving perks include free Internet hookup, free parking, a free DVD library, and across-the-street access to an entire Farmers Market of inexpensive foodstuffs and some wild weekend entertainment. Tip: Request a room facing the alley -- the view is terrible, but you don't get the 24-hour road noise off Fairfax Avenue.

Le Parc Suite Hotel
Situated on a quiet, tree-lined residential street, Le Parc is a sophisticated and stylish all-suite hotel that attracts an interesting mix of clientele: Designers stay here because it's a few minutes' walk to the Pacific Design Center, celebrities in the music industry stay because of its low-key neighborhood location, patients and medical consultants check in because it's close to Cedars-Sinai, and tourists enjoy being near the Farmers Market, the Beverly Center, and Museum Row. The nicely furnished apartment-like units are extra large -- studios are 650 square feet, one-bedrooms 875 square feet -- and each has a well-outfitted kitchenette, a dining area, a living room with a fireplace, and a balcony. What the hotel lacks in views it makes up for in value and elbow room. The hotel's Café Le Parc is a hidden gem, offering very good food and romantic alfresco seating at the rooftop dining area (the $39.95 prix fixe menu is a great deal). Tip: The suites on the first and second floors have just been renovated with new bedding and kitchenettes. Also see what special rates the nearby Le Montrose hotel is offering; perhaps you can do a little bargaining for the best deal.Facilities: Cafe Le Parc w/full bar; outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi; rooftop night-lit tennis court; well-equipped exercise room w/sauna; access to nearby health club; business center; concierge; courtesy car; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; coin-op laundry; laundry service; dry-cleaning service. In room: A/C, TV/VCR w/pay movies, video games, and on-screen Internet access, CD, high-speed Internet access, dataport, kitchenette, minibar, microwave, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron.

Best Western Ocean View Hotel
This ocean-facing chain hotel, located just across the street from Santa Monica Beach and amusement pier, offers welcome price relief in high-rent Santa Monica. The clean and modern property offers terrific bargains to those willing to forego an ocean view from their room. But even the deluxe-view rooms, which all have private balconies looking out across Ocean Avenue to beach and pier, are a steal for this area. Rooms are comfortably outfitted in chain-hotel style; all have coffeemakers, while oceanview rooms have fridges, too (microwaves are available upon request). Don't pay extra for a balcony, though, unless you know it has an ocean view, or you may end up overlooking the subterranean parking lot. The staff is courteous and professional, and many fine restaurants are within walking distance. Heck, they even offer complimentary continental breakfast.
