James Rego Square (Paul Revere Mall)
A pleasant little brick-paved park known as the Prado, the mall holds a famous equestrian statue of Paul Revere. Take time to read some of the tablets on the left-hand wall that describe famous people and places in the history of the North End.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Walk around the fountain and continue to Salem Street.
Massachusetts State House
Boston is one of the only American cities where a building whose cornerstone was laid in 1795 (by Gov. Samuel Adams) would be called the "new" anything. Nevertheless, this is the new State House, as opposed to the Old State House. The great Federal-era architect Charles Bulfinch designed the central building of the state capitol, and in 1802 copper sheathing manufactured by Paul Revere replaced the shingles on the landmark dome. Gold leaf now covers the dome; during World War II blackouts, it was painted black. The state legislature, or Massachusetts General Court, meets here. The House of Representatives congregates under a wooden fish, the Sacred Cod. John Rowe, known as "Merchant" Rowe (Rowes Wharf bears his name), donated the carving in 1784 as a reminder of the importance of fishing to the local economy. Tours (guided and self-guided) leave from the second floor; call ahead to see whether weekend hours have been reinstated.Whether or not you go inside, be sure to study some of the many statues outside. Subjects range from Mary Dyer, a Quaker hanged on the Common in 1660 for refusing to abandon her religious beliefs, to Pres. John F. Kennedy. The 60-foot monument at the rear (off Bowdoin St.) illustrates Beacon Hill's original height, before the top was shorn off to use in 19th-century landfill projects.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Walk down Park Street (which Bulfinch laid out in 1804) to Tremont Street.
Boston Public Library
The central branch of the city's library system is an architectural and intellectual monument. The original 1895 building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Charles F. McKim, is an Italian Renaissance-style masterpiece that fairly drips with art. The lobby doors are the work of Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Abraham Lincoln statue in the memorial in Washington, the Minute Man statue in Concord, and the John Harvard statue in Cambridge). The murals are by John Singer Sargent and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, among others. Visit the lovely courtyard or peek at it from a window on the stairs. The adjoining addition, of the same height and material (pink granite), was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972. The lobby holds changing exhibits. Novel serves lunch and afternoon tea Monday through Friday, and Sebastian's Map Room Café is open for snacks 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday.Free Art & Architecture Tours (www.bpl.org/guides/tours.htm) begin Monday at 2:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at 11am, with an additional tour October through May on Sunday at 2pm.
