During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Kawaiahao Church
In 1842, Kawaiahao Church stood complete at last, the crowning achievement of missionaries and Hawaiians working together for the first time on a common project. Designed by Rev. Hiram Bingham and supervised by Kamehameha III, who ordered his people to help build it, the project took 5 years. Workers quarried 14,000 thousand-pound coral blocks from the offshore reefs and cut timber in the forests for the beams. This proud stone church, complete with bell tower and colonial colonnade, was the first permanent Western house of worship in the islands. It became the church of the Hawaiian royalty and remains in use today by Hawaiians who conduct services in the Hawaiian language (which probably sets old Rev. Bingham spinning in his grave). Some fine portraits of Hawaiian royalty hang inside. We'd recommend the best time to see this edifice is at the Hawaiian-language services, conducted on Sundays at 10:30am.

Puu O Mahuka Heiau
Go around sundown to feel the mana (sacred spirit) of this Hawaiian place. The largest sacrificial temple on Oahu, it's associated with the great Kaopulupulu, who sought peace between Oahu and Kauai. This prescient kahuna predicted that the island would be overrun by strangers from a distant land. In 1794, three of Captain George Vancouver's men of the Daedalus were sacrificed here. In 1819, the year before New England missionaries landed in Hawaii, King Kamehameha II ordered all idols here to be destroyed.A national historic landmark, this 18th-century heiau, known as the "hill of escape," sits on a 5-acre, 300-foot bluff overlooking Waimea Bay and 25 miles of Oahu's wave-lashed North Coast -- all the way to Kaena Point, where the Waianae Range ends in a spirit leap to the other world. The heiau appears as a huge rectangle of rocks twice as big as a football field (170 ft. by 575 ft.), with an altar often covered by the flower and fruit offerings left by native Hawaiians.

Hawaii State Art Museum
Displaying an array of works that reflect a mix of Hawaii's ethnic and cultural traditions, this museum, opened in 2002, offers a real visual treat. It's housed in the original Royal Hawaiian Hotel built in 1872, during the reign of King Kamehameha V. The works of 284 artists blend Western art forms with traditional forms, most of the pieces dating from the 1960s to the present. Allow at least an hour to view the current exhibit, which depicts Hawaii, its history, culture, and ideals through a variety of mediums.

Halekulani
Here's the ultimate heavenly Hawaii vacation. Halekulani translates as "House Befitting Heaven" -- an apt description of this luxury resort, selected the number-one hotel on the island in 2003 by every top travel magazine and publication you can think of: Condé Nast Traveler, Travel and Leisure, Zagat's Top US Hotels, Resorts and Spas, and so on. It's spread over 5 acres of prime Waikiki beachfront in five buildings that are connected by open courtyards and lush, tropical gardens. Upon arrival, you're immediately greeted and escorted to your room, where registration is handled in comfort and privacy. There are so many things that set this luxury hotel apart from the others, the most important being the rooms: About 90% face the ocean, and they're big (averaging 620 sq. ft.), each with a separate sitting area and a large, furnished lanai. Each bathroom features a deep soaking tub, a separate glassed-in shower, and a marble basin. Last year they totally renovated the rooms and added a bedside panel to control everything in the room (lights, air-conditioning, and so on) so you don't have to get out of bed. New high-speed Internet connection was added, complimentary to guests.Other perks include complimentary tickets to any or all of the following: Ihilani Palace, Bishop Museum, Contemporary Art Museum, Honolulu Academy of Art, and the Honolulu Symphony (about $100 per person worth of art and culture). The hotel's restaurants are outstanding, and the House Without a Key is surely one of the world's most romantic spots for sunset cocktails, light meals, and entertainment. You can't find a better location on Waikiki Beach or a more luxurious hotel.Just opened is their luxury spa, SpaHalekulani, an intimate oasis of relaxation that combines healing therapies of the Pacific islands. From the elegant, understated decor to the attentive treatments (try the Polynesian Nonu, a Samoan- inspired/Hawaiian lomilomi massage with hot stones), the SpaHalekulani offers the same level of excellence seen throughout this impeccable property.Facilities: 2 superb restaurants (including award-winning neoclassic French cuisine, and an excellent seafood eatery with one of Waikiki's best views); 2 bars; gorgeous outdoor pool; recently opened SpaHalekulani with 7 treatment rooms featuring a range of healing therapies inspired by the Pacific islands; watersports equipment rentals; bike rental; children's program during the summer and at Christmas; concierge; activity desk; complete business center; salon; 24-hour room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day laundry and dry cleaning.

Waikiki Shore Condominium Resort
As soon as you arrive, you'll see why everyone wants to stay here: the location (right on Waikiki beach) and the view (a spectacular panoramic vista of the entire shoreline from Diamond Head to Honolulu). The apartments -- which are privately owned and decorated and then rented out through Outrigger -- range in size from studio to two-bedroom. Each has a fully equipped kitchen, a big lanai, a spacious sitting area, washer/dryer, and those fabulous views. There are full-time residents who live in this complex, so it tends to be quiet, and entry to the units is through a locked gate and keyed elevators, so security is tight. The building sits on an excellent beach, close to restaurants and shopping. As you might expect, reservations are hard to get; book way in advance. Because this establishment is part of the Outrigger chain, guests have full access to the Outrigger Reef (located right next door), including its pool, exercise room, and business center. Daily maid service, a few on-site shops, and plenty of assistance from the front desk give this condominium stay all the benefits of hotel service with the roominess of your own apartment.Facilities: Outdoor pool; access to all the facilities at the Outrigger Reef hotel next door (including 3 restaurants, 3 bars, 24-hr. fitness room, Jacuzzi, children's program, concierge, activity desk, business center, shopping arcade, salon, massage, babysitting, dry cleaning).

Hale Pupukea
This is the Hawaii you've dreamed about; on the hill overlooking Sunset Beach lies this 3-acre, lavishly landscaped property with a two-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot cottage, with private entrance and enclosed garage. Next door, hosts Ted and Ann Gold make sure that everything is perfect for your stay. A welcome basket with island goodies (fresh fruit from the 75 different fruit trees on the grounds, Kona coffee, chocolate mac nuts, banana or mango bread and popcorn) greets you as you enter the living/dining area. Everything you could possibly want from ironing board to beach paraphernalia (beach chairs, cooler, even big fluffy beach towels) to books on Hawaii fill the immaculately clean house. Outside on the porch is your own barbecue. Next to the cottage is a covered gazebo where you can watch the sunset from the old-fashioned swinging chair. The daily newspaper shows up on your doorstep every day, and you even have your own answering machine on your phone. The Golds have not overlooked any details. It's a short 5-minute drive to the beach, 15-minute drive to the shopping and dining in Haleiwa, and a world away from the urban hustle and bustle of Waikiki.
