During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Miami Nice Excursion Travel and Service
Pick your destination and the Miami Nice tours will take you to the Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, South Beach, the Seaquarium, Key West, Cape Canaveral, or wherever else you desire. The best trip for first-timers is the City Tour, a comprehensive tour of the entire city and its various neighborhoods. If you've got the time, you will definitely want to add on a side trip to the Everglades and/or Key West (though I suggest exploring the Everglades on your own). Included in most Miami trips is a fairly comprehensive city tour narrated by a knowledgeable guide. The company is one of the oldest in town.
Latin American Art Museum
In addition to the permanent collection of contemporary artists from Spain and Latin America, this 3,500-square-foot museum hosts monthly exhibitions of works from Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Usually, the exhibitions focus on a theme, such as international women or surrealism. It's not a major attraction, but it's worth a stop if you're interested in Latin American art. On the same block, you'll find great design stores and a few other galleries.
Bay Escape
This 1-hour air-conditioned cruise will take you past Millionaires' Row and the Venetian Islands for just $15. There's also a food stand and cash bar. The tours are bilingual.
Villa Paradiso
This guesthouse, like Brigham Gardens, is more like a cozy apartment house than a hotel. There's no elegant lobby or restaurant, but the amicable hosts, Lisa and Pascal Nicolle, are happy to give you a room key and advice on what to do. The recently renovated spacious apartments are simple but elegant -- hardwood floors, French doors, and stylish wrought-iron furniture -- and are remarkably quiet considering their location, a few blocks from Lincoln Road and all of South Beach's best clubs. All have full kitchens, and guests have a choice of either a queen or two double beds or foldout couches for extra friends. Bathrooms have recently been renovated with marble tile. All rooms overlook the hotel's pretty courtyard Garden.
Fisher Island Club
Located on an exclusive island just off Miami Beach, this hotel is a luxurious cross between Fantasy Island, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and Survivor. But you will not be roughing it on this island, which serves as a retreat for those with enough money to afford it, including the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Oprah Winfrey (who sold her multimillion-dollar condo here in favor of a multi-, multimillion manse in Santa Barbara). To get to the resort, visitors and residents take a private ferry, which shuttles guests to and from the mainland every 15 to 20 minutes. It can be somewhat of a hassle -- especially if you need to make a quick return to the island -- but it does run on a very regular schedule. Be forewarned that the ferry lets residents on first, so if there's no room after all the Rolls Royces and Ferraris roll on, you're outta luck and will have to wait for the next one. Don't worry if you are carless -- on this exclusive island, golf carts will get you anywhere you need to go.As for location, you're only minutes from the airport, South Beach, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove (not counting ferry time). Still, considering the pampering you'll receive in this former Vanderbilt mansion turned resort extraordinaire, you probably won't want to leave the seclusion of the island for the frenetic city. Rooms vary in size and shape, and cottages come with hot tubs. A world-class spa and club offer all the amenities you could imagine. And you definitely won't go hungry: The elegant Vanderbilt Club offers Continental cuisine; the Beach Club and Golfer's Grill serve basic but expensive sandwiches and salads; an Italian cafe prepares good pizza and pastas; and a gourmet general store sells everything else. On top of it all, enjoy mixing and mingling with some of the most offbeat millionaires in the world -- you know, the kind who tug their Gucci-clad pooches around in their Rolls Royce golf carts.
Park Washington Hotel
The Park Washington, designed in the 1930s by Henry Hohauser, is a large, refurbished hotel just 2 blocks from the ocean that offers some of the best values in South Beach. Most of the rooms have original furnishings and well-kept interiors, and some have kitchenettes. Bathrooms are small but clean. Guests also enjoy a decent-size outdoor heated pool with a sun deck, bikes for rent, and access to a nearby health club, as well as privacy, lush landscaping, consistent quality, and a value-oriented philosophy. This hotel attracts a large gay clientele.
