During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Old Corner Bookstore Building
Built in 1718, this building is on a plot of land that was once home to the religious reformer Anne Hutchinson, who was excommunicated and expelled from Boston in 1638 for heresy. In the middle of the 19th century, the little brick building held the publishing house of Ticknor & Fields, which effectively made this the literary center of America. Publisher James Fields, known as "Jamie," counted among his friends Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. For many years this was the Globe Corner Bookstore (the bookstore is now in Harvard Square). Today the building houses the Boston Globe Store (tel. 617/367-4000), which sells souvenirs and newspaper-related merchandise. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn right and walk 1 block.
USS Constitution Museum
Just inland from the vessel, the museum features participatory exhibits that allow visitors to hoist a flag, fire a cannon, swing in a hammock, and learn more about the ship. The interactive computer displays and naval artifacts appeal to visitors of all ages. A new exhibit about the Barbary War (the only such exhibit in the United States) allows you to decide whether to risk a ship in the Mediterranean. The museum's collections include more than 3,000 items, arranged and interpreted in ways that put them in context. At the navy yard here, National Park Service rangers (tel. 617/242-5601) staff an information booth and give free 1-hour guided tours of the base.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow the trail up Constitution Road, crossing Chelsea Street, and continue to the Bunker Hill Monument. A more interesting, slightly longer route runs from Chelsea Street and Rutherford Avenue (back at the bridge) across City Square Park.
The New England Holocaust Memorial
Erected in 1995, these six glass towers spring up in the midst of attractions that celebrate freedom, reminding visitors of the consequences of a world without it. The pattern on the glass, which at first appears merely decorative, is actually 6 million random numbers, one for each Jew who died during the Holocaust. As you pass through, pause to read the inscriptions. To continue on the Freedom Trail: The trail now passes through a lot of post-Big Dig construction and emerges in the North End. Follow Cross Street to Hanover Street, turn left, and follow Hanover to Richmond Street. Turn right, go 1 block, and turn left.
Hostelling International-Boston
This hostel near the Berklee College of Music and Symphony Hall caters to students, youth groups, and other travelers in search of comfortable, no-frills lodging. Accommodations are dorm-style, with six beds per room. There are also a couple of private rooms. The air-conditioned hostel has two full dine-in kitchens, 19 bathrooms, a large common room, and meeting and workshop space. It provides linens, or you can bring your own; sleeping bags are not permitted. The enthusiastic staff organizes free and inexpensive cultural, educational, and recreational programs on the premises and throughout the Boston area. Hostelling International also operates a summer-only hostel just outside Kenmore Square.
Holiday Inn Select Boston Government Center
At the base of Beacon Hill, near Massachusetts General Hospital, this 15-story hotel is one of the chain's leaders in the battle for the business traveler. It also attracts guests with business at the hospital, and the staff is sensitive to the needs of patients and relatives. The location is convenient to downtown, within walking distance of the Back Bay, and not far from East Cambridge. The good-size guest rooms have contemporary furnishings and plenty of business amenities. Each room also has a picture-window view of the city, the State House, or the parking structure; ask for a room on a high floor, facing Blossom Street if possible. The building is part of a small retail complex with a supermarket and shops, which should have reopened after extensive renovations by the time you visit.Facilities: Restaurant (American); lounge; outdoor heated pool; small exercise room; access to nearby health club ($10); concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; room service until 11pm; coin laundry; laundry service; executive-level rooms. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
Jurys Boston Hotel
Jurys Doyle, a well-known Irish chain, isn't all that well-known in Boston, but this building is: It used to be police headquarters. These days the welcome is considerably warmer (the mantra is "Irish hospitality") and the business and leisure clientele is a lot more satisfied than the folks who checked in to the police station. One wing and the top two floors of the 1925 building are new constructions, and the interior of the whole limestone-and-brick structure looks great, with dramatic public areas. Decorated in peaceful, muted colors, the luxurious guest rooms have nice touches such as a work area with an ergonomic chair, down comforters, good-size bathrooms (not a sure thing in a renovation project), and windows that open but also do a good job of muffling street noise. Still, light sleepers will want to face away from busy Berkeley Street and perhaps request a room on the second floor, where windows are smaller than elsewhere. Jurys' main competitors are the hotels listed in this section as "Very Expensive," but while the brand advertises itself in this market, you'll probably score a deal. Check ahead for introductory specials, as this hotel opened recently.Facilities: Restaurant (American); Irish bar; coffee and wine bar; exercise room; access to nearby health club ($10); concierge; business center; 24-hr. room service; laundry service; same-say dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
