During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Adventure Science Center
It's hard to say which exhibit kids like the most at the Center. There are just so many fun interactive displays from which to choose in this modern, hands-on museum. Though the museum is primarily meant to be an entertaining way to introduce children to science, it can also be fun for adults. Kids of all ages can learn about technology, the environment, physics, and health as they roam the museum pushing buttons and turning knobs. On weekends there are almost always special shows and demonstrations, and throughout the year the museum schedules special exhibits. In the Sudekum Planetarium, there are regular shows that take you exploring through the universe. Allow 2 hours.
Music Valley Wax Museum
If you haven't spotted any country stars in Nashville yet, this wax museum offers the next best thing. Here you'll find wax figures of more than 50 famous stars, most of which are wearing original stage costumes. Out in front of the museum, more than 200 stars have left their footprints, handprints, and signatures in concrete. Allow 20-30 minutes.
Tennessee Walking Horse Museum
The Tennessee walking horse, named for its unusual high-stepping walking gait, is considered the world's premier breed of show horse, and it is here in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee that most of these horses are bred. Using interactive videos, hands-on exhibits, and other displays, this museum presents the history of the Tennessee walking horse. Though the exhibits here will appeal primarily to equine enthusiasts, there is also much for the casual visitor to learn and enjoy. The annual Tennessee Walking-Horse National Celebration, held each August here in Shelbyville, is one of middle Tennessee's most important annual events. Tennessee walkers can also be seen going through their paces at various other annual shows in the Nashville area.
Doubletree Hotel Nashville
Of the three modern high-rise hotels in downtown Nashville, this is one of the best choices if you're here on vacation. It has a less hectic atmosphere than the Sheraton or the Renaissance, and extensive renovations completed in 2002 have given the Doubletree a very contemporary look. (But the fresh-baked cookies delivered to your room upon check-in are strictly a down-home touch.) Located a few blocks from The District, this hotel is also convenient for anyone in town on state government business. The corner rooms, with their sharply angled walls of glass, are the most appealing units in the hotel. Also, be sure to ask for a room facing the street as these get more sunlight. An executive level offers additional amenities including a buffet breakfast and vouchers for drinks in the lobby lounge.
Wyndham Garden Hotel-Nashville Airport
Recently renovated, this hotel has a refreshingly peaceful ambience. Just inside the front door, you'll find a seating area with a living-room feel beckoning you to sit down and relax a while. Behind this space is a lounge done up to look like a library. The guest rooms all feature classic cherrywood furniture. Spacious bathrooms include plenty of counter space.
Renaissance Nashville Hotel
Because it's directly connected to the Nashville Convention Center, this large, modern hotel is often filled with conventioneers and consequently can feel crowded and chaotic. However, it does offer all the expected luxuries. The king rooms (especially the corner kings, which have huge bathrooms) are a better choice than rooms with two beds, which are a bit cramped. However, whichever style room you choose, you'll at least have a comfortable wingback chair in which to relax, and walls of glass let in plenty of light. The upper floors offer additional amenities, including a concierge, private lounge, bathrobes, express checkout, complimentary continental breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres, and evening turndown service. The Commerce Street Grille, located off the lobby, serves American fare in a sort of Southern-plantation setting. In the greenhouse-like sky bridge you'll find a lounge deli, where Krispy Kreme donuts and Starbucks coffee are available each morning.
