During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Seattle Asian Art Museum
Housed in a renovated Art Deco building in Volunteer Park, the Asian art collection places an emphasis on Chinese and Japanese art, but also includes works from Korea, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Himalayas. Among the museum's most notable pieces are the Chinese terra-cotta funerary art, Chinese snuff bottles, and Japanese netsukes (belt decorations). One room is devoted to Japanese ceramics, while three rooms are devoted to Chinese ceramics. The central hall contains stone religious sculptures of South Asia (primarily India). The museums hosts frequent lectures and concerts.

Northwest Seaport/Maritime Heritage Center
Although this marine heritage center at the south end of Lake Union is currently little more than a shipyard for the restoration of four historic ships, it has grand plans for the future. If you're a fan of tall ships and the age of sailing, you can pay a visit to the 1897 schooner Wawona, which is currently under restoration. Also being restored are a 1904 lightship, an 1889 tugboat, and a 1933 salmon troller. Throughout the year, there are folk-music concerts ($10 adults, $7 seniors and children) on the deck of the Wawona (call for details), and on the second Friday of each month, there's a free Chantey Sing from 8 to 10pm.Nearby, at Chandler's Cove, you'll find the gift shop and the few small exhibits of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, 901 Fairview Ave. N. (tel. 206/624-3028; www.pugetmaritime.org). The shop and exhibits are open daily from noon to 5pm.

Kubota Garden
Located in South Seattle in a working-class neighborhood not far from the shores of Lake Washington, this 20-acre Japanese-style garden was the life's work of garden designer Fujitaro Kubota. Today the gardens are a city park, and the mature landscaping and hilly setting make this the most impressive and enjoyable Japanese garden in the Seattle area. Kubota began work on this garden in 1927, and over the years built a necklace of ponds, a traditional stroll garden, and a mountainside garden complete with waterfalls. A tall, arched moon bridge is a highlight. The self-taught Kubota went on to design gardens at Seattle University and at the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. Between April and October, free tours of the gardens are offered at 10am on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Seattle area, including:

Sorrento Hotel
With its wrought-iron gates, palm trees in the entrance courtyard, and plush seating in the octagonal lobby, the Sorrento, which first opened its doors in 1909, has a classic elegance and old-world atmosphere. All of the rooms were recently renovated, making them every bit the equal of the elegant lobby. The guest rooms here are among the finest in the city: No two are alike, and most are set up for business travelers. Although more than half the units are suites, many provide little more space than you get in a standard room. The hotel boasts commanding views of downtown Seattle from its setting high on First Hill, yet downtown is only a few (steep) blocks away (and there's complimentary limousine service if you don't feel like walking). Ask for a room on the west side of the hotel, where you'll have a view of the city and Puget Sound. The hotel's dining room is a dark, clubby place; in the lounge, which has live jazz piano, you can get light meals, afternoon tea, and cocktails. Cafe tables are set up in the hotel's courtyard in the summer.

Mayflower Park Hotel
If your favorite recreational activities include shopping or sipping martinis, the Mayflower Park is for you. Built in 1927, this historic hotel is connected to the upscale Westlake Center shopping plaza and is within a block of both Nordstrom and Bon-Macy's. Most rooms here are furnished with an eclectic blend of contemporary Italian and traditional European pieces. Some units still have small, old-fashioned bathrooms, but all have been recently renovated and are now up to modern hotel standards. The smallest guest rooms are cramped, but these standard rooms have also been renovated in the past few years. If you crave space, ask for one of the larger corner rooms or a suite. There are also rooms with two bathrooms (popular with women traveling together). Martini drinkers will want to spend time at Oliver's lounge, which serves the best martinis in Seattle and has free hors d'oeuvres in the evening. The hotel's Andaluca restaurant is a plush, contemporary spot serving a highly creative cuisine.

Vance Hotel
Built in the 1920s by lumber baron Joseph Vance, this hotel has a very elegant little lobby with wood paneling, marble floors, Oriental carpets, and ornate plasterwork moldings. Accommodations vary in size and style, and some are absolutely tiny (bathrooms are also uniformly small); corner rooms compensate with lots of windows and decent views. Furniture is in keeping with the style of the lobby and for the most part is fairly upscale. If you're here on business, this hotel offers a convenient location, with the convention center only a couple of blocks away. At press time, the Vance was planning a major remodel and upgrading that may cause the room rates to rise.
