During your Indianapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Children's Museum of Indianapolis
This is one of the largest children's museums in the world, with interactive exhibits covering everything from archaeology to world cultures to biotechnology, plus extensive toy and dollhouse displays, a working antique carousel ($1 per ride), and a planetarium. At press time, the museum was about to open Dinosphere, a $25-million multisensory exhibit that's a unique attempt to combine serious science (a working laboratory and the largest collections of juvenile fossils in the world) with kid-friendly interactive exhibits (dressing up in a dinosaur costume to sit on a nest of simulated eggs). If you have kids, this is the place to take them.
Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement
Located 30 miles northeast of downtown, this restored 19th-century village faithfully reproduces pioneer life between 1820 and 1840 with the help of 36 carefully restored buildings, crafts demonstrations, and reenactments of events on the frontier. In summer, you can take a picnic here and listen to a concert under the stars as part of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's "Symphony on the Prairie" series.
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art
This impressive $14-million building houses one of the country's most notable collections of Native American and Western art. The "Art of the American West" collection includes works by Frederic Remington and Georgia O'Keeffe. The Native American artifacts include clothing, beadwork, and pottery from all over North America.
Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn
This conventional motel with standard rooms is noteworthy because of its location -- outside turn two on the Indianapolis Speedway. But its location is really the only reason to stay here -- unless you plan to spend all your time at the track, you're better off elsewhere. Refrigerators are available in king rooms for no extra charge.
Omni Severin Hotel
This classy, beautifully restored hotel is directly across from Union Station. All of the comfortable guest rooms were redone in 2002 and offer a range of amenities, including bathrobes and Nintendo game systems. Some rooms have balconies; the "Get Fit" rooms have portable treadmills. Tip: The hotel's website often features great weekend deals.
University Place Conference Center and Hotel
Located on the campus of Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), this hotel offers well-furnished and functional rooms with refrigerators, coffeemakers, and hair dryers. Guests can use campus facilities, including a terrific indoor pool, fitness center, track-and-field stadium, and children's day-care center, making this a great choice for active families.
