Los Angeles hotels: Fandamonium in February

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

The Kyoto Grand -- downtown, yet still serene -- is a strong option for fans in town for the NBA All-Star Game.

By Abby Samler

For those of us stuck in a deep freeze, it’s hard not to long for palm trees, neon lights and driving with the top down. Love it or hate it, Los Angeles has all that and more, plus the very high probability of running into a celebrity – or five – even if you aren’t invited to the red carpet. Your winter blues couldn’t have come at a better time: February is ripe for people-watching opportunities at Los Angeles hotels. We focus on the two marquis events in Hollywood this month, and where to stay, say, if you’re hoping to bump into Leonardo DiCaprio. (more…)

Hotel Del Coronado. By Rennett Stowe.

Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Beach, California. Credit: Rennett Stowe.

A favorite activity on my beach vacations, I’m jogging on a sublime stretch of California coastline that “Dr. Beach,” Stephen Leatherman, just named one of the top 10 beaches in America, Coronado Beach. Straight ahead, the white crescent of sand curves to the left, leading to the bluffs of Point Loma and the thrashing waters of the Pacific. Behind me is one of the most famous hotels in America, Hotel del Coronado, looking like a multi-tiered wedding cake with its red-shingled roof and turrets. As I breathe in big gulps of salty air, I realize this has to be the image most people think of when they dream about California beaches.

Airlines add service from Boston

Airline tickets
By Joe Brancatelli

ROUTE MAP

A Three-Airline War Erupts in Boston: After months of promising to launch flights to Chicago, Virgin America has bailed, claiming that it couldn't find gate space at O'Hare Airport. Instead of Chicago, Virgin America says it will try Boston. The 18-month-old carrier says it will begin twice-daily flights from Boston to both Los Angeles and San Francisco on February 12. That announcement drew an immediate response from JetBlue Airways, which has emerged as the new power player at Boston's Logan Airport . After abandoning its nonstops from Boston to both San Francisco and nearby San Jose in September, JetBlue says that it will restore a seasonal summer service to San Francisco beginning on May 1. JetBlue has continued flying its Boston-Oakland route and it also flies from Logan to Long Beach near LAX. And American Airlines has its own Boston plans. It will launch a daily nonstop to San Diego on April 7 and resume seasonal flights to Paris/CDG on May 1. American is also adding frequencies on its existing routes to Los Angeles, its Dallas/Fort Worth hub and London/Heathrow.

HOTEL HOT SHEET

Recession Be Damned, The New Hotels Keep Coming: The global hotel industry is melting down — an industry analyst said this week that a record number of new lodging projects are being abandoned — but there are still lots and lots of properties in the pipeline. And not a day passes when a new one doesn't open. The latest crop: The Doubletree Guest Suites Fort Shelby has debuted inside the shell of the long-abandoned Fort Shelby Hotel in downtown Detroit. It's the second high-profile opening in Detroit this fall. Westin recently brought the Book-Cadillac back to life. … Fairmont has a 150-room hotel in the Battery Wharf district of Boston. It's the second luxury hotel opening in Boston this fall. The Mandarin Oriental opened in Back Bay in October. … Marriott has opened a 648-room hotel near Hong Kong's International Airport. The SkyCity Marriott is in the SkyCity development near the AsiaWorld Expo. It's a 25-minute train ride from Central. … The former Atlantic hotel in Nice, France, has been renovated and reopened as the Boscolo Exedra Nice. The 113-room property, which dates to 1913, is operated by the Boscolo chain of Italy.

Star-gazing in L.A.: Where to spot celebrities

Beverlyhillshotel
By Lena Katz

The #1 most-asked question in Los Angeles:

"So, what do you do?"

The #2:

"Excuse me, don’t I know you from somewhere?"

After you’ve been in L.A. a while, though, you learn to keep that one in your head, at least till after you’ve taken a good, long look at the person in question. Because chances are, you don’t actually know them; you’ve just seen their face before on a cell phone commercial or in a movie. Celebrity sightings are a standard perk of living in Los Angeles -– and you don’t just see them at Spago. Here are a few places where my loyal scouts have had close encounters with famous kind within the past few weeks:

The farmers market deserves first mention. And it doesn’t even necessarily matter which one: Brentwood denizens report recent Calista Flockhart and Marcia Cross sightings; Jennifer Garner mingles with L.A.’s star chefs in Santa Monica; and the Grove in Hollywood gets everyone from Vince Vaughn to Victoria Beckham.

Crown Bar in West Hollywood is getting lots of attention for its celeb-studded Wednesdays, which draw all kinds of stars: Dave Navarro, Christina Aguilera, Joel Madden and the list goes on.

Earning a special distinction for being one of the only celeb party spots that literally became too hot to handle is Tropicana Bar in the Hollywood Roosevelt. In 2007 the hotel had to put the kibosh on its own pool bar because the action was overshadowing the hotel itself. It’s back in action now, and insiders tell us the weekdays are the best times to find everyone from Colin Farrell to Bruce Willis.

STK steakhouse in Beverly Hills draws a steady stream of stars, producers and R-listers (reality TV celebri-lites) to its elegant modern dining room. Recent sightings include Kate Beckinsale, American Idol alum Chris Daughtry and Mr. and Mrs. Tori Spelling.

All of the various Beverly Hills hotels see their fair share of celebs … either on a red carpet, drinking with their agent at the bar, or taking over an entire restaurant for a quiet lunch. The Beverly Hilton is regularly closed off for some flashbulb-powered event, which, depending on the day, might draw everyone from this year’s Guess! model crop to Women in Film honorees like Renee Zellweger. Year-round Weinstein sightings are guaranteed at the Peninsula, while at Oscar time, every other A-lister you can imagine is a possibility. And then, of course, there’s the Beverly Hills Hotel: posh perennial haven for every tormented star from James Woods to Brit Brit.
