If you’re planning a romantic getaway, steer clear of dartboard-in-a-map approaches. Los Angeles hotels may be a dime a dozen (or perhaps a buck a dozen, once you adjust for inflation), but scoring that one-in-a-million bullseye shouldn’t be left to chance. With that in mind, here are three of the finest Los Angeles beach hotels where you can enjoy both the Southern California scene and the coast.

  • Hotel Maya in Long Beach has a self-proclaimed joie de vivre that’s bolstered by its close proximity to one of the city’s great attractions, the Queen Mary. It’s also home to one of the few truly elegant waterfront restaurants in LA, Fuego, which specializes in Mexican and Latin American cuisine. The freshly renovated rooms offer scenic ocean and city-skyline views. It’s also pet-friendly, but for a romantic getaway I suggest leaving Spot at home.
  • Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica has the ubber-modern exterior look of a futuristic hospital, but the oceanside bluff it’s perched on gives it away. Inside, it’s head-to-toe Art Deco from suites that scream “glamorous” to the dining room that whispers “feed me gourmet things.”
  • Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes stands as an example of all that’s right in the world when ocean meets land meets man-made structure. I’ve never had a coastal view actually take my breath away, but this came close. Bungalow suites offer private patios and a taste of what it must be like to be royalty.

5 hip hotels for business, pleasure in downtown LA

Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles

The Millennium Biltmore has earned its place in Hollywood history.

By Whit Honea

California vacations have been romanticized in books, screen and song, and the city at the heart of it all is Los Angeles. In the words of Randy Newman, “I love L.A.” — and when I visit the City of Angels, these are the five downtown Los Angeles hotels where I like to stay:

1. Millennium Biltmore Hotel is more than a hotel, it’s a landmark. The architecture and decor harken back to the glory days of Hollywood. The Gallery Bar is considered one the best among the downtown Los Angeles hotels, and the adjacent Cognac Room is a luxurious tribute to the Biltmore’s impressive history.

Major hotels change brands in New York, San Diego, Detroit

The hip Hotel Baronette in Nevi, Michigan

Hotel owners in 2010 are caught in the same kind of financial crunch that first affected homeowners in 2008. The value of their properties have plunged and many properties are now worth less than their outstanding mortgages. The result? Lots of management changes and switches in brand affiliations, especially in and near major business-travel communities.

Four Seasons is finally out as manager of Aviara, the fancy resort near San Diego. After almost a year of haggling, nasty public comments, roadblocks, accusations of fiscal turpitude and arbitration, the hotel’s owners will pay Four Seasons an undisclosed sum to go away. Effective May 8, the 329-room resort will become the Park Hyatt Aviara.

Starwood has sold off two of its W Hotels in New York, The Court and The Tuscany. (Old-timers might remember these hotels as Doral properties.) Both properties have become part of the newish St. Giles chain, which is based in Britain and has generally focused on budget properties.

San Francisco’s Parc 55 changes hands, again

San Francisco's Parc 55 Hotel

San Francisco's Parc 55 hotel

By Joe Brancatelli

Marriott made a big deal about San Francisco’s Parc 55 hotel back in 1998 when it reflagged the 1,000-room property as a Renaissance hotel. At the time, it was Marriott’s 1,500th hotel — a milestone that’s meaningless to business travelers but fraught with importance for lodging bigwigs. But that was then and this is now, and the Parc 55, once again an independent property, has found itself a new brand affiliation. It becomes a Wyndham later this month.

JW Marriott at L.A. Live

JW Marriott at L.A. Live

In Los Angeles, hotels are not just for tourists. Locals like me lounge at the pools, sample the restaurants, hang out at the bars, relax at spas, and stay overnight every once in a while.

This spring, the City of Angels is celebrating new hotels, renovated ones and perennial favorites. Here’s the dish on properties and nearby events:

Diggin’ Downtown Los Angeles

The newest addition to downtown Los Angeles hotels is the JW Marriott and The Ritz-Carlton, with opening rates starting at $179 through May. These hotels are located in the L.A. Live complex, which boasts the Conga Room, GRAMMY Museum, Nokia Theater,  Lucky Strike Lanes, and restaurants like Rock ‘n Fish.

A mile away is Dodger Stadium, with opening day slated for April 13. Budget tip: Grab the Dodgers Coca-Cola Family Pack, which includes four tickets, four Dodger Dogs and four Coca-Cola fountain products for as little as $68. (more…)

New Los Angeles hotels, entertainment spice up a California vacation

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Los angeles hotels By Lena Katz

Recession whah-huh? That isn’t a word that crosses the lips of restaurateurs, nightlife impresarios and hoteliers in SoCal. No matter what else might happen, people expect the newest, best and the most out of a Southern California vacation — and that’s what they’re getting.

The current “biggest, best-est thing” in Los Angeles shop-dine-tainment news is L.A. Live, a downtown development that brings together big-name restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and residences.

If anything could truly be the heart of the sprawled-out, mysterious downtown district, this would be it.  STAPLES Center pre-dates LA Live, but it also justifies its existence: it was built to provide food, drink and fun for stadium crowds pre- and post-event. Key venues include the reinvented Conga Room, the GRAMMY Museum, Nokia Theater and Lucky Strike Lanes. Restaurants range from Fleming’s to Rock ‘n Fish to Trader Vic’s (coming soon).

Doors open at new Los Angeles Hotels

The setting couldn’t be more different than the Laguna original, but the new Montage Beverly Hills is nonetheless a fitting follow-up to its sister hotel. From the grandiose marble-outfitted lobby to the elegant hush-hushed bar to the distinctive dining venues, this hotel impresses without ever crossing into ostentatious.

If you like to be in the center of the biggest splash, opt to stay at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, a new luxury Los Angeles hotel located on one of Beverly Hills’ most trafficked thoroughfares. It’s owned by nightlife impresario Sam Nazarian. Famed for his tough velvet ropes and celeb-packed night spots, Nazarian seems to be going for a similar vibe at his first-ever hotel.

Over on Sunset, a former ‘80s rocker hangout has turned into the artsy-chic Andaz. Don’t ask what the name means — just know it’s under the Hyatt umbrella, and still a Hyatt hotel underneath the glass walls and art installations.

There are new players on the L.A. restaurant and bar scene, too. Check back next week for that story.

Vanity Fair exhibit among top Los Angeles attractions

Monday, November 10th, 2008

It is only appropriate that the Vanity Fair exhibit Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008 is making one stop in the United States — Los Angeles. I had the pleasure to view the Vanity Fair exhibit at  LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Contemporary Art) prior to its recent opening.

The exhibit showcased celebrity photographs from 1913 to present day — a collection of the magazine’s vintage prints and contemporary photographs. I spent hours just looking at the photography of many amazing artists including Annie Leibovitz.

This is one exhibit that you won’t want to miss. In addition, there is a new photography exhibit, The Story of Photography, which is also a recent addition at LACMA.

Los Angeles is a mecca of cultural events and happenings. The American Film Market, an annual Santa Monica event, brings together companies that sell the rights to films and companies that purchase the same films to distribute to theaters and other media. This is the only event of its kind held in the United States. Representatives attend from 75 countries, and the event  brings in approximately 8,000 people to the city.

Re-connect this fall and enjoy all that the city has to offer: culture, shopping and new and exciting Los Angeles hotels. The SLS Beverly Hills Hotel just opened this month — in a central location near Museum Row and the George C. Page Museum/La Brea Tar Pits, California Craft and Folk Art Museum and the Petersen Automotive Museum. It’s also close to some of Southern California’s famous attractions: the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Kodak Theater, Universal Studios Hollywood and The Grove, a European-themed shopping destination.

If you’re looking for a little taste of Europe here in America, the Sofitel Los Angeles (a Paris-based company) is also a perfect location within the same distances as the SLS. Recently renovated, the hotel is definitely a sight to see. The Stone Lounge and Simon LA are very popular among the local community for fine dining and evening beverages.

Keeping with a European theme, The London is also a fantastic new hotel (less than a year old) located on San Vicente Boulevard. The internationally acclaimed chef fromHell’s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsey, oversees all of the dining at the hotel. In addition, calls (from the hotel rooms) to London are complimentary. The hotel is within walking distance to the famous Sunset Strip.

The Strip has many famous venues and shops, from the House of Blues to Club Monaco, from the Viper Room to BCBG, from tattoos to Jaguars and more. Another new hotel — the Andaz, a boutique brand by Hyatt — is due to open on the Strip. This hotel is the former home of the Hyatt on Sunset.

When shopping and  culture have you exhausted, nothing says relax like a day at the beach on your Los Angeles vacation. Santa Monica (where Baywatch was filmed), Malibu, Venice and the south bay beaches of Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo are all within your reach.
